Extreme weather is hitting communities around the world right now. When conditions change fast, reports from people on the ground help forecasters see what radar and satellites can miss. Our latest SciStarter newsletter features weather projects you can join safely: 🌧️Measure rain where you live with @CoCoRaHS 🌧️Report rain, snow, hail, or fog from your phone with mPING from @NOAANSSL 🌧️Clear a clogged storm drain before rain arrives with Cleanlet 🌧️Train as a severe weather spotter with SKYWARN from the @NWS 🌧️Stay indoors and help @DoNASAScience @NASA scientists study weather on Mars @CloudspottingM Safety comes first. Never go out in a storm to collect data. Clear drains only before rain and only when they are safe to reach, and stay out of floodwater. Report from a safe location, follow each project's training, and always follow official warnings. Read the newsletter: conta.cc/3Tbj1UI #CitizenScience #WeatherSafety #FlashFloods

On this day—September 13, 1993 Washington got the photograph it had been waiting for. Arafat on the lawn. Israel recognized the PLO. The PLO promised to drop terrorism and seek peace. Arafat was signing a hudna: a pause to collect land, power, control, guns, money, and legitimacy. Then, he could hit harder. He admitted it in Arabic. At a Johannesburg mosque on May 10, 1994, Arafat told worshippers in Arabic that Oslo was a “tactical step.” The word he used was “Hudaybiyyah,” which was the truce Muhammad made and then broke in order to take Mecca. Then Arafat called for jihad to take Jerusalem. The same week as the handshake, Jews were already being attacked in Gaza. On October 29, Arafat was caught red-handed. Three men from his own Fatah group grabbed Chaim Mizrahi buying eggs outside Ramallah, stabbed him, stuffed him in the trunk, and burned the car. Then buses full of Israeli civilians started blowing up across the country. Palestinian terrorist groups turned getting on a bus into Russian roulette. In 2000, everything became clear. Arafat was offered what he claimed in English he wanted: a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He walked. His widow later said he had already chosen to launch the Second Intifada and sent the family out of the country so he could start it. Oslo handed Arafat a government, a police force, international legitimacy, and billions of dollars. The terrorism never stopped. It was just given a ministry.

Hey @amazon —you used to be a book store. Why now ship a new book in a pristine jacket loosely in an oversized box with a heavy product box and a heavy bottle? Do you not care about what happens to books anymore?!

The idea that scientists “hate being proven wrong” makes no sense. Science REQUIRES the possibility of being wrong. The whole method rests on falsifiability- if a claim can’t be tested in a way that might disprove it, it isn’t scientific.

This is truly remarkable!! Watch as an Israeli emergency volunteer reunites with a young Arab child he saved on October 7th. The moment they meet again is filled with overwhelming gratitude and joy ❤️ This is the real Israel. What you’re being fed by the media is 100% lies.

The discussions of progress in robotic surgery sure suggest deskilling and the potential degradation of training, so not surprising to see similar concerns elsewhere in medicine…
Does A.I. support of physicians lead to their deskilling? A new report of gastroenterologists doing colonoscopy for polyp detection, with and without A.I., raises the possibility thelancet.com/journals/langa… @LancetGastroHep

Tesla's robotaxi launch in Austin didn't go completely to plan. Footage of its unsafe driving behaviours is all over the internet. topgear.com/car-news/tech/te… I spoke to @BBC_TopGear about 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐊'𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 even after fast-forwarding of self-driving trials to 2026. There are aspects that the US could ("should") take on board from the UK's approach... Also, good to see that, finally, Texas will force developers to prove their safety before rolling out robotaxi services. About time, and this is essential! @TransportCttee @transportgovuk @ccavgovuk @UNECE @wmgwarwick @HVM_Catapult @uniofwarwick

Sigh…
Companies will make you do internet security training then leave their social media managers as FB admins after they quit.

A heartbreaking moment that was saved by an SS photographer at Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the deportations of Hungarian Jews. It was taken 81 years ago, most likely in late May 1944. A little child finds a dandelion in the grass and is handing it or showing it to an older boy. All the people in this picture had already gone through the arrival selection and were awaiting to be murdered in a gas chamber. They were killed shortly after. Please share this unique document.

Why does using Huawei's Ascend 910 chip violate U.S. export controls? Think of it as a "secondary violation.” Here's how it works. 🧵👇(1/5) bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
