A brilliant primer for my Conversation with @ChiefConPSNI Jon Boutcher #TheSaintPatrickCentre is #peelers #nolan : @StephenNolan ’s masterly & courageous must watch @BBCiPlayer TV series on frontline policing in NI. From police chase to pepper spray & tenderly attending the most vulnerable drug addict. A landmark production portraying the work of our police officers as you’ve never before. No wonder it's been recommissioned & I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get top awards. It will certainly inform my Chief Constable on Thurs 24th Sept. Book your ticket now. @BBCNewsNI @UTVNews @irish_news @BelTel @News_Letter @BelfastLive @PoliceServiceNI

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Stephen Walker RIP. Journalist, author, historian, broadcaster and delightful colleague in our @BBCNewsNI @bbcradioulster days Stephen was a Titan and his death leaves a terrible void. The courage he showed in battling illhealth in recent years when he wrote those magisterial biographies of Hume & Trimble was truly inspirational Heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and loved ones. 🙏🕯

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bryan Gallagher RIP, the former Principal of Saint Mary’s Primary School, Mullymesker in Cleenish Parish, Arney in Co. Fermanagh where I was a pupil from 1960 until 1966. As I wrote in a newspaper article about Bryan back in 2014: “Apart from my late parents, no other person had as great an influence on my formation and I will always be in his debt for showing me the way in developing a relationship with God, knowing the difference between right and wrong, taking pride in my Irish identity, nurturing a sense of place and getting to know about the wider world.” That article was published in “The Irish Catholic” on December 4th 2014 and is reproduced with their kind permission below my separate tribute in my Facebook account. It is also available via AI. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his children Declan, Garvan, Ciara, Bryan Óg & Riana and to all his family and other loved ones. I last had the privilege of meeting Bryan at the funeral of Maeve (née O’Hare) his beloved wife just ten weeks or so ago back in May when although evidently frail he greeted me with his customary smile and warmth. Bryan was a Fermanagh Renaissance man and one felt he was a person who would have excelled in whatever career he had embarked on. After Saint Mary’s he distinguished himself as founding headmaster of Saint Aidan’s High School, Derrylin and then in another of my former schools, Saint Joseph’s College, Enniskillen. After his retirement as a headmaster he embarked on a new career as an author and broadcaster and his voice became familiar to listeners to the BBC both here and across the water and on RTE. As a producer in religious affairs with @bbcradioulster in Belfast I knew at firsthand how his distinctive contributions to Thought for the Day were valued by my editorial colleagues and by our audiences. Master Gallagher, as I knew him as a young boy, made an immense contribution to the Common Good in the place where God placed him and he will be greatly missed. May God have mercy on his gentle soul. – at Edenderry, Northern Ireland

A great joy to be present at the opening of the Clonard Solemn Novena @ClonardMBelfast @DownandConnor one of the great demonstrations of faith in these islands. Welcoming the packed congregation in the church and online Fr Brendan Kelly CSsR, the Rector said Clonard is a place where all are welcome. "Each of us is called by God to be a sign of Hope in today's world" ...a world of great uncertainty, he said, that "is confronted by war, terrorism and racism." Amen. #Clonard #Novena

Amen.
I stand with my brother in Christ, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, in his courageous call for a kingdom of peace. As I prepare to visit Rome later this month to meet and pray with Pope Leo, I am mindful of his call to keep our eyes open to the suffering of the world, and our gaze fixed on our crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ – the image of the invisible God, in whose image and likeness every human being is made. In him, we recognise that we are children of the one Father and members of a single human family. Prayer is not an escape from the world, nor a turning away from injustice; rather, it is a turning towards God in the midst of it, confronting evil, seeking God’s will, and becoming instruments of transformation and peace.
