Found it very well put 👇 By Volodymyr Kukharenko: “Many people still confuse medieval Rus’ (Ruthenia) and modern russia, but they are not the same, neither historically, politically, nor culturally. Rus’ (also known as Kyivan Rus' or Ruthenia) was the name of the ancient state founded in Kyiv in the 9th century by a Scandinavian dynasty of Rurikids (Igor and Olga (Ingvarr and Helga in Old Norse) were the founding couple). It was one of the most developed European powers of its time, a Christianized, literate, and trade-rich civilization that connected Byzantium with Northern Europe. In 1100, Kyiv was 4th largest city in Europe, times bigger than Paris or London. Moscow, on the other hand, didn’t even exist until 1147, more than two centuries after Kyiv was already a flourishing capital. Its founder, Yuri Dolgorukiy, was a descendant of Kyivan rulers, and his grave is in Kyiv, not Moscow. You can literally visit it today. So Moskow was late colony of Rus', and that was the place where Kyiv royalty sent their least important members to rule, as it was kinda wild place by the standards of their time. For hundreds of years, the territory around Moscow was known as Moskovia (Muscovy). It had a very different history and political trajectory. After being taken by Mongols in 1237, Muscovy was a vassal of the Golden Horde and later of the Crimean Khanate for over 450 years, paying tribute and adopting much of the political culture, administrative style, and even vocabulary from its steppe overlords. Only in the early 1700s, during the reign of Peter I, did Muscovy rename itself the “Russian Empire”, deliberately appropriating the name Rus’ and its history to create the illusion of continuity. This was a political rebranding, not a historical fact. So there is no direct political ancestry of modern Russia from Kyivan Rus’. Moskow was a colony of Rus controlled for just 90 years, then they were under a different rule for over 4 centuries. If anything, its governance, autocracy, and imperial expansion are closer to the legacy of the Golden Horde than to the democratic traditions and European orientation of ancient Rus’. The truth is simple but important: 👉 Kyiv, not Moscow, is the cradle of Eastern Slavic civilization. 👉 Ukraine, not russia, is the rightful heir of Rus’. And stealing that heritage is one of the reasons of this war. That's why putin talks about his version of history so much. Our very existence debunks his narratives.”

I'm sitting in a Kyiv hotel room listening to explosions that are rattling the windows. Meanwhile, the White House is trying to cyber-bully me because I criticized Steve Witkoff for calling Putin a “humanitarian.” What a weird night. Ah, to be an American journalist in Ukraine.

I spoke with Marco Rubio @SecRubio, and it was a substantive conversation – focused on the issues that matter. I am grateful for his readiness to help and his clear position. First, ballistic missile interceptors, which are needed to protect lives. Second, early warning of Russian ballistic missile attacks, which is vital. Third, the situation with Starlink/Starshield, which needs to be restored. Of course, all of this comes against the backdrop of our diplomatic efforts to end this horrific war and the constant killing of people. We agreed to get in touch again soon for an update. Thank you, Marco, for the constructive discussion! Thank you to everyone in America who supports fair approaches!

NEW!! Ukrainian negotiators are expected to meet Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Norway later this week to discuss efforts to advance peace negotiations, two Ukrainian and US sources familiar with the plans told @RFERL. One source said Zelenskyy is considering attending the talks. Preparations are ongoing, and final details have yet to be confirmed.

Putin’s forces killed a baby in her stroller on a playground. Her name was Angelina. She was just over a year old when a Russian Shahed drone struck a park in Kharkiv region. Her mother, Inna, later died in hospital. An 11-year-old girl was also killed. Six people died in total, while 14 others, including six children, were injured.

Had a conversation with the American President’s envoys, Steve Witkoff @SEPeaceMissions and Jared Kushner @jaredkushner. Peace comes only through strength and cooperation built on trust. We are doing everything on our part to make this happen, and to ensure that America’s position is strong and helps bring peace closer. Peace that everyone, except Russia, has been waiting for over the past four and a half years. In particular, we discussed the results of our teams’ meeting in Florida. Our teams maintain virtually nonstop communication. We are also preparing the next steps in diplomacy. We constantly inform our partners about the real situation with Russian strikes, which do not cease for a single minute, and about air defense issues. A lot here depends precisely on America’s position. Ukraine remains ready to work constructively, honestly, and toward a real result. I thank everyone in America who supports Ukraine and this particular approach.

Russia is trying throw Ukraine into cold and darkness ahead of the winter. Yesterday - one of most massive attacks on energy facilities, many in West of Ukraine. 😡😡
Yesterday, the Russians carried out one of their largest attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector – more than 15 critical power generation and transmission facilities were targeted across different regions of Ukraine. Restoration work is ongoing, with all necessary services and all available resources of Ukrainian energy companies involved. I thank everyone working practically nonstop to restore power. The most difficult situation was in Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Shepetivka, Slavuta, and Netishyn. Energy facilities in the Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipro, and other regions were also hit. The Russians have scaled up their anti-energy operation and are trying to stretch our reserves and repair capabilities as thin as possible. Between 7 p.m. yesterday and 7 a.m. today alone, more than 320 jet-powered and gasoline-powered “shaheds,” along with loitering munitions, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, were used against our energy sector, our cities, and our communities. And although our warriors are shooting down a significant number of them, the sheer scale and unrelenting pace of Russia’s strikes, specifically against our energy sector, are unfortunately having severe consequences. It is important that our European partners have already prepared new support packages for Ukraine. I am grateful to them for this. And it is important that everyone in America also sees what is really happening. At a time when the Russians have carried out such a massive attack on our energy sector, a decision was unfortunately made in America to completely disregard the Lindsey Graham Act, which was supposed to impose truly effective pressure on Russia to bring this war to an end. This Act could have helped enormously – and still can! But it needs to actually work, and every voice in support of it matters. Russia is trying to cause a blackout in Ukraine – right before winter. Russia is trying to leave millions of our people without electricity and heating. Pressure is needed to stop this. A U.S. sanctions blackout, easing pressure on the aggressor, financial rewards for Putin – all of this only encourages him to keep attacking. We must not give up ground. We must keep trying to end the war. To end it, not give Putin every reason to continue it indefinitely. I thank everyone who is truly fighting for peace and helping Ukraine!

Sweden has announced a new support package for Ukraine totaling 500 million Swedish kronor - nearly €45 million. Part of these funds will be directed toward the energy sector, in particular, toward the urgent repairs of power grids and heat supply systems. This decision by our partners comes in response to persisting russian terror targeting Ukraine’s energy system ahead of the winter season. We deeply appreciate the assistance from our Swedish friends, who are also active contributors to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Thanks to #Sweden, Ukrainian regions have already received dozens of tons of equipment essential for replacing components at energy facilities destroyed by russian strikes. I would like to express my special gratitude to Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, @BuschEbba, and Minister for EU Affairs, @Rosencrantz_J, for their consistent stance and tangible support for Ukraine during these challenging times.

"Civilian casualties in Ukraine jumped by 85% in September as Russia increased drone and missile attacks, according to the United Nations. At least 328 civilians were killed and 2,105 injured in attacks last month, UN human rights monitors said in their monthly report on Friday. It was the highest September total since the start of Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, with missiles and drones the main cause of casualties, they said." bloomberg.com/news/articles/… ukraine.ohchr.org/en/Protect…

When President Trump welcomed Putin onto American soil for peace talks, Putin responded less than two weeks later with a massive bombardment of Kyiv that killed more than 20 civilians. When President Trump pressured Ukraine to make territorial concessions to Russia, Putin turned around and provided Iran with intelligence to help target American servicemembers. And when President Trump secured his diesel deal with Putin, the Kremlin responded by continuing to strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure — despite the president’s calls for an energy ceasefire. Just last week, Russian forces also bombed buses full of innocent civilians, killing more than 30 people, in violation of international law. Time and again, we have seen how Putin responds to American concessions: with contempt for the United States and increased violence against innocent Ukrainians. Lindsey Graham understood this dynamic. That's why he and I spent his final years fighting to give the president the tools to put maximum pressure on Putin and bring him to the negotiating table. I urge the president to reverse course, use these sanctions, and return to the time-tested principle that lasting peace is secured through strength — not accommodation.

I don’t usually join panels, but given the news and my presence on the ground, I was asked to weigh in. Here’s my response to a panelist who appeared to be defending Vladimir Putin amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine: “Do you want to save Ukrainian civilian lives, or would you rather hinder and kneecap what’s supposed to be your ally in its fight for survival against Russia? That’s simply what it comes down to now.”
