Have we messed up the marketing of the greatest challenge in history?
“climate change”
“climate crisis”
“climate emergency”
None of these names tells a relatable story about what’s going on.
Great marketing makes every receiver feel smart.
Do you feel smart?

Replying to @FreefromTorture
@FreefromTorture I'd like to understand why it is that news articles about torture often avoid details?
How will people be moved if we're so often spared the details?
It can often feel like news on climate collapse with the consequent starvation, flooding, fires airbrushed out.
For example, in reading about Sednaya in Syria, I had to dig into YouTube to find accounts of what actually happened.
Like this account from Mazen al-Hamada: youtube.com/watch?v=idaQR4cV…
I understand that it's hard to hear, but it seems like a strange taboo to me.
🧐 Did you know that, as birds age, they “go grey” like we do… but we humans can’t tell?
(i.e. if you’re dating a bird (encouraged) then they could potentially be misleading you about their age, and who knows what else)

Interestingly (I just learnt that) birds often prefer older, “greyer” mates – perhaps due to experience / them having mortgage-free nests with slides 🛝
Anyway, here’s a small raft of nature memes for you, including a video of two swans being reunited after many moons.

But why Matthew??
Well, now that @AimHiLive is growing up, it’s high time I got back to publishing my own stuff again 🖍️

Oh and which financial facts are those?!😠

Science communicators have a duty to consider that:
1. For a scientist, “conservative” means underestimating a risk
2. For an actuary, “conservative” means overestimating a risk
Our role, on the interface between science and civilisation, is to avoid defaulting to the former.

I'm of the view that this piece from James Hansen and 17 others last week is one of the most important published on the state of the climate crisis in years. A 🧵

Everyone in the world should be given all their money in $10 bills and made to count it – alone – by hand.
Anything they can’t count, they can’t have.
I reckon a person could get through about $5mn in a week.
$5bn would take 20 years of counting.

Alarm bells should be ringing everywhere. We seem to have underestimated the chance of climate breakdown causing simultaneous harvest failure in the world's major breadbaskets. It's an issue I discuss in Regenesis, but it appears much worse than we thought nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
As the UK government announces scrapping:
- restrictions to new oil and gas
- meat and flying taxes
- new recycling schemes
- imminent bans to fossil fuel boilers and cars

Therefore, we must choose the names we use, and stick to them.
So I’m interested to know, if we were to choose just one or two of these names, which should they be, and why?
