Sportsmanship is not just a student issue. Coaches model it. Parents influence it. Officials deal with it. Administrators set expectations for it. If we want better behavior, adults have to lead it consistently. ~ via @NFHSDanSchuster

A RECORD-HIGH 8,415,684 students played high school sports in 2025-26! But there’s been only a modest rise in the number of new officials nationwide. 👀 SEE THE GAP? 👀 Join those who have already raised their hand to #BecomeAnOfficial. We need YOU! buff.ly/ROM9edc

Negativity. Immaturity. Aggressive behavior. When high school athletic events are canceled because of bad fan behavior, everyone loses. ESPECIALLY our students. Let’s #BenchBadBehavior and preserve civility in our schools! - via @MarkKoskiNFHS buff.ly/3DoRO8U

🏆 So much of high school sports and activities starts behind the scenes. From organizing championships to supporting schools, providing resources and creating opportunities for students, high school athletic and activities associations help make the experience possible for millions of students across the country. They’re working every day to make sure students have the opportunity to play, perform, compete and belong. This #MadePossibleWeek, we’re celebrating the state associations that help make high school sports and activities possible — and the people behind them who keep students at the center of it all. 👏 Thank you for all you do! ❤️

The name on your shirt represents your school. Your community. You and your family. How we carry ourselves at athletic events speaks volumes about who we are. WHO DO WE WANT TO BE? Always respect the game and #BenchBadBehavior. buff.ly/p12WNPI

In school sports, coaches are educators first. They care about WHO YOU BECOME as a person. Not just how you perform as an athlete. Talk to your local school about participating in their athletics program today! #ChooseSchoolSports niaaa.org/choose-school-spor…

Just had a student-athlete receive his second college scholarship offer. Our head coach spoke with the college coach, and these were the questions they asked: • How is his home life? • How are his academics? • How is he in the weight room? • Is he coachable? • Does he pick up on concepts? • Are his parents a problem? • Is he a complainer? • Does he run track? • What is his legitimate size? Not one question about his stats. Not a single one. College coaches are evaluating the whole person. Character. Family. Academics. Work ethic. Coachability. Football IQ. Physical development. Attitude. The scoreboard matters. The film matters. The production matters. But when a college coach is deciding whether they want to invest in a young man for the next four years, who he is matters just as much as what he does on Friday night. That’s why we talk so much about building the person, not just the player. The game may get you noticed. Your character determines what happens next. @CoachJonWheeler

He did not become a coach for the money. He accepted the early mornings, late nights, long bus rides, and small stipend because he believed athletics could change young lives. He wanted to teach discipline, resilience, accountability, teamwork, and how to respond when life does not go your way. Then the purpose slowly changed. Every loss became public criticism. Every lineup became a debate. Parents measured him by playing time. The community measured him by wins. Scholarships, trophies, records, and championship banners became the prize. The development of young people became an afterthought. One night, after another angry message questioning his decisions and character, he placed his whistle on the desk and walked away. He did not stop loving the kids. The adults made it impossible to keep loving the work. The school did not simply lose a coach. Student-athletes lost a mentor who knew their stories, believed in their potential, and cared about who they became after the season ended. Winning matters. Competition matters. Excellence matters. But in education-based athletics, they must serve the development of students—not replace it. If we want to keep great coaches, we must create environments where they can teach, mentor, challenge, and develop young people without having their value reduced to playing time, scholarships, trophies, and banners. When winning becomes the prize, we risk losing the people who understood the purpose. Are the adults in your athletic community helping great coaches stay—or giving them reasons to leave? #EducationBasedAthletics #CoachBurnout #HighSchoolSports #SportsParents #CoachingMatters
