Hibiscus might be one of the flowers most closely associated with Hawaiʻi, but there’s a lot more to it than a pretty bloom. Several hibiscus varieties reached the Hawaiian Islands long before people arrived, carried across the Pacific by natural forces. Today, hybrids can be found in an incredible range of colors, along with native species such as kokiʻo keʻokeʻo, known for its rare fragrance. Hibiscus also had practical uses in old Hawaiʻi. Bark was used to make dye for fishing nets and lines, and its fibers were used for items including hula skirts and wigs. Hawaiʻi’s official state flower is the yellow hibiscus, maʻo hau hele, a title it received in 1988. Native hibiscus plants now face threats including habitat loss, introduced species, and the hibiscus erineum mite. There’s a lot of history behind a flower we see all over the islands.
