I still remember sitting at our kitchen table in 1991 in Levittown, where my parents still live, registering to vote with my dad and my late big brother Mike. Dad was a JFK Democrat. Mike was a Reagan Republican. And right there, I learned one of the most important lessons I’ve carried into public service: no one party has a monopoly on good ideas or good people. Today, my Dad and I often reflect on how neither Kennedy nor Reagan could survive their own party’s primary today. That says a great deal about how far our political system has drifted. It’s one of the reasons I introduced the Let America Vote Act—to open primary elections nationwide and give independent and unaffiliated voters a voice in choosing who represents them — in both Primary and General elections. The answer to a broken political system isn’t to exclude more Americans. It’s to give more Americans a voice and a seat at the table.
