Thread summarising what happened with avian influenza in the US. I had expected a full fledged attempt at stopping the spread in cattle. That did not happen. Same for mpox. That makes me conclude we are in for more and not fully prepared
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

This is basically a classical dangerous Gain of Function (dGoF) experiment. I wish the US government would shut it down. A while ago, Stacey Schultz-Cherry and I wrote a commentary (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), that ends with this sentence:
US: Bird flu has been spreading for around two months on a Utah mink farm holding thousands of animals. None have been culled, workers aren't being monitored, and the USDA says it doesn't regulate mink. So thousands of animals are exposed, workers could be at risk, and nobody seems to be taking responsibility. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

These extraordinary mRNA cancer vaccine results didn’t happen overnight - they happened through DECADES of hard work and dedication. Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman helped make mRNA usable. Pieter Cullis et al helped develop the lipid particles that deliver it into cells. Thousands of scientists, clinicians, trial volunteers and funders have kept this work moving forward through setbacks, funding uncertainty and enormous challenges. That foundational work helped give us the mRNA platform for COVID vaccines. Now the results of this large phase 3 trial has confirmed that a personalized mRNA vaccine, added to immunotherapy, can help keep melanoma from returning. All while this technology has been demonized and scientists and public health workers have been vilified. Still - they keep working. For the ultimate benefit of society. We owe them our immense gratitude and support to keep going.

Thank goodness, Google search hasn’t gone totally to shit. I found the image and the story. Mama didn’t think so highly of you. Damn did she nail it. 💯
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The quote attributed to Mary Anne Trump in the image is fabricated with no supporting evidence; it originated as a 2019 social media meme and has been repeatedly debunked. snopes.com/fact-check/tru… politifact.com/factchecks/201… fullfact.org/online/donald-… factcheck.org/2019/12/dubiou…

Beautifully said, Beate. Thank you. ❤️ Kindness costs us so little, yet it can mean so much to someone carrying the emotional weight of caring for others. One thing I hope we learned from the pandemic is that healthcare workers need more than applause and expressions of gratitude. They need compassion, understanding, and meaningful support, especially when the work becomes overwhelming. And sometimes the simplest thing we can do is listen, without judgment, when they tell us what they’ve been through. Thank you for helping spread that message.

Unfortunately very true! 👇🏼 We others should do as much as we can to support those who care for all the sick and dying people. If you can be anything, first of all be kind to everybody, and health care workers in particular! 👇🏼
There is a part of the COVID-19 pandemic we haven’t talked about nearly enough. The people who witnessed its worst moments, day after day, often with little time to process what they were experiencing. Nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, paramedics, nursing home staff, and countless others who cared for people struggling to breathe, watched patients deteriorate despite their best efforts, and sometimes stood beside people as they died without their families present. While much of the world experienced the pandemic through news reports, restrictions, statistics, and political arguments, these workers experienced it at the bedside. For some, those years left memories that have proved difficult to put behind them. And for some, the suffering they witnessed was only part of what made the experience so painful. This thread is about those people, what they endured, and what we might learn by listening to them.

Most people know Dr. Peter Hotez from his television appearances during COVID, his defense of vaccination, and the relentless attacks directed at him on social media. I know Peter as a friend. And I want to tell you about another part of his life that rarely enters those arguments. For more than four decades, Peter has devoted much of his scientific career to diseases that afflict some of the poorest people on Earth. Diseases that cause enormous suffering but attract relatively little commercial investment because the people who need treatment often cannot afford to pay for it. Hookworm. Schistosomiasis. Chagas disease. Leishmaniasis. These are hardly household names. Their victims rarely make headlines, and the scientists working on them seldom become celebrities. Peter chose this field long before COVID, long before the cable news appearances, and long before strangers began calling him a pharmaceutical industry shill. His career deserves a closer look. Because the work tells a story that is almost entirely absent from the accusations made against him.

1 Komme aus dem Lachen nicht mehr raus. Meine Mutter heute beim Arzt.
