"It's another example of how critical it is…to be thinking about preparedness around public health types of outbreaks…It is never a great time to let our guard down, so we need every available diagnostic tool…We need ongoing support of infrastructure from epidemiologists to anyone who's involved in these types of outbreaks.” – Rodney E. Rohde, PhD, MS, SM(ASCP)CM SVCM,MBCM In this six-minute video, Dr. Rodney E. Rohde talks about Cyclosporiasis, the intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, also known as Cyclospora, including: * A discussion of different laboratory diagnostic tests * The value of patient travel and food diaries for the past 7-10 days * A reminder that confirmatory epidemiology relies on prompt local reporting #StrongerTogether #Cyclosporiasis #Cyclospora

Today, we’re celebrating one of the most sustainable, reliable, and fun ways to experience Maryland. Whether you're a daily commuter or a weekend trail blazer, World Bicycle Day offers the perfect time to dust off your helmet and enjoy the ride. Did you know World Bicycle Day is a relatively recent official holiday? In 2018, the United Nations officially declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day after a dedicated grassroots campaign led by sociologist Leszek Sibilski. The UN recognized the bicycle as a symbol of human progress and advancement—praising its longevity, versatility, and environmental friendliness, having served humanity for over two centuries! It's the Wheel Deal: Jumping on a bike isn't just a great way to get from point A to point B; it’s a win-win for you and the environment: 🚴‍♀️ Eco-Friendly Exploration: Bicycles emit zero greenhouse gases. Choosing two wheels over four helps keep Maryland's air clean and protects our local wildlife habitats. 🚴‍♂️ Health & Happiness: Cycling is a fantastic cardiovascular workout that builds strength, improves joint mobility, and significantly reduces stress. 🚴‍♀️ Deep Connection to Nature: Traveling at a bicycle's pace allows you to truly take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Maryland’s diverse ecosystems. Find Your Trail in Maryland! Maryland Department of Natural Resources manages hundreds of miles of beautiful, multi-use trails perfect for every skill level. Looking for someplace to start? Check out these favorites: 🚴‍♀️Western Maryland Rail Trail: Over 20 miles of flat, paved trail mirroring the scenic Potomac River. 🚴‍♂️Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail (aka NCR Trail): 21 miles of shaded, crushed-stone path winding through Gunpowder Falls State Park. 🚴‍♀️ Gathland State Park: Didn't forget you mountain bikers out there. These trails offer the challenge you're looking for! Don't Forget: Always wear a helmet, yield to hikers and horses, and practice "Leave No Trace" principles to keep our public lands beautiful for generations to come!

Blue jays often get attention for their loud calls and bright blue feathers, but these birds also play a major role in helping our oak forests grow here in Maryland. Every fall, blue jays collect and store thousands of acorns to prepare for winter. Unlike squirrels, blue jays can carry several acorns at once using a special pouch in their throat, and they fly up to 2.5 miles away before burying them. They only return for about 25% of their cache. Those uncollected acorns can sprout into new oak trees. Over time, that behavior helps regenerate forests, support wildlife habitat, stabilize soil, improve water quality, and store carbon. So the next time you hear the familiar call of a blue jay in your neighborhood, remember, you are listening to one of Maryland’s hardest-working tree planters.

⚠️ Invasive Species Alert If you encounter this plant anywhere in Maryland, whether in the Chesapeake Bay or in a freshwater lake or pond, please report it to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Water chestnut (Trapa natans and Trapa bispinosa) is a highly invasive species capable of spreading rapidly. Its seeds are especially concerning: they are hard, sharp, and can remain viable in the sediment for over 10 years! This plant is native to parts of Eurasia and Africa. Each year, Maryland’s Natural Resource Biologists and volunteers work to locate and remove Trapa sp. wherever sightings are reported. Infestations can vary widely from year to year. If you are interested in helping remove this invasive species, please contact Mark Lewandowski at [email protected]. Extra eyes and helping hands make a huge difference. Together, we can slow its spread and protect Maryland’s waterways.
