New paper alert🚨🐳- Hundreds of whale bones have been recovered from the Anglo-Saxon site of Hamwic (modern Southampton). Many of these have been used for the production of bone combs. Were the Anglo-Saxons performing whaling? Or did they rely on trade?

An often overlooked part of the expansion of empires is the movement of animals.
The first water buffalo 🐃 in the Caucuses, which is now an important farm animal there, were introduced by Caliphates spreading into the region 600-800 AD.
