Manet鈥檚 Luncheon on the Grass was his most controversial early picture and yet it borrowed heavily from tradition. It takes its subject of a nude female with clothed men from the Pastoral Concert, then attributed to Giorgione and now to Titian (ca. 1505). And the three figures in front echo the group in the bottom right in Raimondi's engraving after Raphael's Judgment of Paris (ca. 1525), clearly inspiring the arrangement.

Claude Monet, The Magpie. From 1868 to 1869. For Monet, Snow isn't simply white. He built The Magpie from pale sunlight and colored shadows. The Paris Salon rejected this painting in 1869.
