I urge Americans to fight for the ADA. Fight for people in DEIA programs to keep their jobs We are not “less than”. We’ve been fighting for survival in a world that sees us as expendable. Taking our employment is just another step towards making us disappear forever. /6

They’ve also frozen all civil rights cases at the Justice Department, which is responsible for handling ADA complaints.  He explains that we’re moving to a “merit based” society… which is a fancy way of saying disabled and marginalized people not welcome.  /5

One phrase that is very triggering to abuse survivors is, “I would never have put up with that.” It makes them feel that they were weak for having endured it. It also implies they are partly to blame for ‘allowing’ themselves to be abused. The fact is that unless they've walked in your shoes, faced what you have faced, had fear for their children, been threatened, blackmailed, controlled, put in a place of fear, been made dependent, they really can't say what they would have done in your position. #DomesticAbuseAwareness #CoerciveControl

A survivor often doesn’t know they’re oversharing because they’re so desperate to be understood. If you find that hard to believe, you wouldn’t believe the inner dialogue they carry and the ways people have treated them for not knowing how to handle getting hurt.

Abusers often wear two faces—one for the world and one for you. This duality isolates you, as others can’t believe they’re capable of such harm.

Don’t cry, don’t look upset, don’t react or you are unstable. And if you do hold it together long enough to get through the session you are cold, heartless and manipulative. Meanwhile the abuser gets to say all sorts of outrageous made up nonsense and no one minds.

If a narcissistic abuser accuses you of something that you didn’t do, it is often the case that they have been doing it to you all along! ⚠️#narcissist #projection

Abusers will target your vulnerabilities without care or mercy. If you are afraid of abandonment, they may threaten to leave you. If you have insecurities and self-doubt, they will gaslight you and make you feel crazy. If you fear for your children, they will threaten to take them from you. They will go for your deepest fears and use them against you to keep you dependent and to maintain their dominance over you. 😔 #emotionalabuse

30 years ago this month, I gave a speech warning of a two-tiered society composed of a few winners and a larger group of Americans left behind, whose anger and whose disillusionment could be easily manipulated. We're seeing the ramifications of this yet again.

How serious is emotional, psychological, and verbal abuse, and coercive control? A ten-year study released in 2017 by researchers from four British universities concluded that the stress of having 'relatives' who are "critical, unreliable, and annoying," causes people [exposed to them] to more likely develop dementia. There is a direct correlation between living for an extended period of time with a 'difficult relative' and the eventual development of dementia in the person who is the target of abuse. Is this a risk worth taking? Is it wise to perpetuate a relationship that can ultimately be damaging to our mental health?

“Maybe if I just did x, y, or z, they’d be less angry and they'd go back to the person I fell in love with.” Have you ever felt like this? As if their mood depended entirely on your actions? It’s a trap designed to make you believe that YOU have the power to control their actions and emotions, but you don’t. You can bend over backwards, walk on eggshells, and give up everything for them—and it still won’t be enough. Because the issue is NOT with you. It’s with them. #EmotionalAbuse #CoerciveControl #BreakTheCycle
