ALT Part of a leaf in a medieval manuscript, folio 2 recto in Oxford, Merton College, manuscript 249. The leaf bears 2 columns of Latin text copied in a firm, clear hand in dark brown ink, and ornamented with slightly enlarged majuscules in plain black or plain red. The leaf boasts 2 line drawings in dark brown ink. In column 1, a side-on view of a man sleeping in a bed. He reclines on his back, blankets draping down to the floor. Above him, atop the covers, prances an enormous cat. In column 2’s line drawing the man has arisen. With one hand he wields a short spear; with the other, he holds a horn to his mouth. Running, blowing the horn, he drives away the cat—which dashes off towards the right, off the page, peering back at the man apprehensively. Poor kitty!
