Our Ice Rescue Teams successfully rescued a dog who went through the ice and was unable to get out this afternoon near the Blair Rd Boat Launch. At approx. 14:55, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from the dog’s owners who reported that dog was at the end of the ice shelf in the water and unable to get out near the 300 block of Blair Rd. Upon arrival, our Ice Rescue Teams confirmed the dog was approx. 30ft from shore and struggling to keep its head above water. Our Ice Rescue Technicians quickly set up for the rescue and a rescuer made their way out to the dog with a fortuna. At 15:20, the dog, “Tika”, was rescued and safely back on land doing well. Credit to the owners who did exactly what we always preach if this happens: Called 9-1-1 and stayed on land and didn’t try to make the rescue themselves. Our response times are fast and our Ice Rescue Teams are highly trained with the appropriate equipment. Doing this will always keep you safe and is your pet’s best chance for survival. #OttNews 📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde

Firefighters rescued multiple dogs, revived one, during a basement fire today in the City's South End.   At approx. 11:14 this morning, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting smoke coming from their neighbour's house. Firefighters arrived 4min after being dispatched to the call and confirmed smoke coming from the front of the two-storey single family home in the 0-100 block of Finn Ct. A "working fire" was declared to dispatch additional resources to the scene. There were reports on scene that a resident had gone inside to retrieve multiple pets. Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside. A secondary crew began searching the smoke filled home for any occupants. Firefighters confirmed the fire started in the basement and began extinguishing the fire. At 11:45, Fire Crews had completed two full searches of the home and confirmed there were no occupants inside. Firefighters did locate four dogs inside and one of them was VSA (vital signs absent). All four dogs were brought outside and Firefighters did CPR and delivered oxygen through the use of a special mask designed for animals that is carried on our trucks to the dog that was VSA. Firefighters successfully revived the dog and it has since been brought to an animal hospital for further treatment. Firefighters contained the fire to the basement before it could spread throughout the home. An @OttFire Investigator has been dispatched to the scene. There are no reported injuries to any occupants. #OttNews

Firefighters from Station 36 had their work cut out for them today when they spent 1.5 hours trying to locate a family cat that had been missing for 3 days in the 1800 block of Thornecrest St. The cat got into the ceiling 3 days ago but, through the use of a thermal imaging camera, Firefighters were able to determine that the cat fell down a shaft and was at the bottom of a wall near the front door. The cat was safely extricated and there will be some minor drywall repairs to be done.🐱🚒
