Family offices and private capital don’t need to become experts in every new theme. They need to get to useful competence faster than the market. Josh Kaufman’s 20-hour framework is a practical operating system for that. The principle has direct application where asymmetric information and analytical edge matter: • Rapidly building “good enough” competence in a new sector, asset class, structure, or technology (private credit nuances, AI infrastructure, climate tech unit economics, specific industry value drivers, etc.) so you can underwrite, ask better questions, or quickly pass. • Mastering practical tools (advanced modeling, data analysis, AI-assisted research workflows) without multi-year academic detours. • Overcoming the status/ego friction that keeps sophisticated capital sitting on the sidelines of unfamiliar opportunities. • Next-gen education or principal skill-building inside a family office without requiring full-time domain expertise. The edge is rarely “knowing everything.” It is often getting to useful competence faster than others and then compounding from there.

Biggest barrier to evaluating new opportunities isn’t complexity. It’s the early emotional discomfort of feeling incompetent. Pre-commit to 20 hours of deliberate practice on the sector or structure. Most people quit before the learning curve steepens. That’s the edge.

The 10,000-hour rule is for world-class mastery. For capital allocators, 20 focused hours is usually enough to go from “I don’t understand this” to “I can underwrite this intelligently.” Deconstruct → learn just enough to self-correct → remove friction → commit through the frustration barrier.

Second straight losing week for the S&P and Nasdaq. This week has a real reason to be different. The S&P fell 0.43%, the Nasdaq 0.76% over the past five sessions — the second consecutive weekly decline for both. The Russell 2000 rose almost 2%, continuing to rotate away from the names that carried 2026 all year. Oil pulled back over 1% on it, though Friday's close was still the highest since April. One number worth sitting with from this weekend: Goldman Sachs cut its Korean stock market target by 25% on continued AI-sector selloff concerns. That's not a headline reaction. That's a major institution recalibrating a full-year forecast. This week's actual catalyst is Wednesday. The Fed's policy decision lands then, and it will matter more to your cap rate than any single day's oil headline between now and Wednesday morning. If you're deciding whether to list, sell, or refinance before year-end, Wednesday is the date to build your timeline around — not the news cycle in between. Want help thinking through what your numbers look like heading into it?

Sailormen: clean settlement, 97 of 136 units survived under new operators. Hooters: sold back to founders for a comeback, still closing stores a year later. New ownership doesn't automatically fix unit economics. Sometimes it just changes whose name is on the closure notice.

Sailormen's Popeyes bankruptcy: 136 locations at filing, 97 sold, 39 closed. A judge just approved a global settlement closing the case. 71% of the real estate survived under new operators. That's the finish line every distressed franchisee bankruptcy is aiming for.

Hooters sold 100+ locations back to its founders in 2025 to engineer a comeback. Still closed ~56 restaurants in 2026. New ownership inherited the same real estate and cost pressures. Sold to new owners isn't automatically the end of a distress story.

18.5 hours between the Fed decision (Wed 2 PM) and GDP + PCE (Thu 8:30 AM). Hold priced ~90%. No dot plot, so Warsh's press conference is the signal. Which of these would change your pricing, and what is your plan? #NetLease #CapitalMarkets #CommercialRealEstate #NNN #Investors

May this day bring Sabbath rest to my heart and my home. May God’s image in me be restored, and my imagination in God be re-storied. May the gravity of material things be lightened, and the relativity of time slow down. May I know grace to embrace my own finite smallness in the arms of God’s infinite greatness. May God’s word feed me and his Spirit lead me into the week and into the life to come. By @PeteGreig, @247prayer lectio365.24-7prayer.com/sha… #prayer #faith
