Government: You owe us money. It’s called taxes. Me: How much do I owe? Gov’t: You have to figure that out. Me: I just pay whatever I want? Gov’t: Oh, no we know exactly how much you owe. But you have to guess that number, too. Me: What if I get it wrong? Gov’t: You go to prison.

If you really step back and watch how adults interact, it’s clear how many of us are still children inside. How badly we’re trying to overcompensate for our own shame. And how desperate we are to be loved.

Witnessing your parents with regret at the end of their lives is a heartbreaking experience. No one talks about how hard it is to grieve the life their parent never got to live.

Yes, healing is hard. Becoming the best version of yourself isn’t meant to be easy. Not healing is also hard. Re-living generational trauma cycles is hard. Being stuck is hard. We get to choose our version of hard.

Time doesn’t heal all wounds. Time can distance us from wounds. But those wounds will come out as: drinking more than you want, pushing people away, and feeling numb and disconnected from life. The body doesn’t forget. Even when we want to. Do the work. Take responsibility for your triggers. Learn new ways to speak to yourself. Practice the pause before the habit reaction. That’s how wounds heal.
