It is said, #RabindranathTagore had handed over his manuscript of Rakta Karabi (The Red Oleander) to veteran thespian Sisir Bhaduri in the early 1920s. But the play could not be staged. Because, no one could be found for the role of Nandini, the protagonist, an earth angel who represented indomitable human spirit against tyranny, oppression and greed. Until, 1954, that is. Long after the poet's death, when Bohurupee staged the play with Tripti Mitra in the lead role. And history was made. #Today is her birthday. She would have been a centenarian. Tripti as Nandini. MATTER OF GREAT PRIDE FOR INDIAN SCIENCE!
Ashoke Sen becomes the first Indian to win the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal (2026), jointly awarded by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his pioneering work in String theory.
deccanherald.com/science/ben…
String theory gives a unified description of all matter and the forces between them based on the postulate that the elementary constituents of matter are tiny one dimensional (string-like) objects instead of point particles. Sen’s breakthrough work has shown that multiple string theories are all different versions of a single underlying theory.
Incidentally, I met Ashok Sen for the first time, when both of us were elected as FRS (Fellows of Royal Society) in 1998. Ashoke ( nominated by Stephen Hawking himself) was young 42 yrs and
I was an oldie - 55 yrs though!
What struck me was Ashoke’s incredible simplicity. His wife Sumathi Rao has reportedly said that Ashoke bought his first suit and needed some assistance to wear his first tie for that prestigious 1998 FRS ceremony in London, when one signs in the same book that Sir Isaac Newton has signed.
A film made on the life and work of Ashoke Sen, when we at the
H K Firodia Award in Science & Technology honoured him in 2005 in Pune, will inspire all our budding scientists - showing how science & simplicity goes together.

Two terrorists walked into a Mumbai maternity hospital at night. On the first floor, one nurse had 20 pregnant women in her ward.
Her name is Anjali Kulthe, a staff nurse at Cama Hospital.
On 26 November 2008 she was on night duty in the antenatal ward. About 20 women were due to deliver.
From the ward window she saw two men shoot the guards at the gate. They were Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail.
She shut the heavy double doors of the ward. She moved the pregnant women and their families into a small pantry at the far end.
Ismail fired at the ward. A bullet bounced and hit a hospital helper in the hand. Anjali called a doctor, who called the police.
The firing went on for more than an hour.
When the terrorists moved upstairs, one of the women went into labour. Anjali held her hand and walked her up the stairs to the delivery room. The baby was born safely.
A month later she was called to Arthur Road Jail to identify the terrorist. She picked out Kasab.
He told her, "You are right. I am Ajmal Kasab."
She later testified against him in court, in her nurse's uniform. As she walked out, policemen saluted her.
I think everyone will agree this indeed was the pujo song of the year, Durga Puja anthem 2026.
What a catchy tune and rhythm.
