Michael Carrick will doubtless pay the price with his job for this deserved defeat to an excellent Bournemouth side and another lifeless display by his Manchester United team. Some of his selections and tactics have been questionable, United were again so open in the centre. But Carrick was not responsible for recruiting Youri Tielemans, who lacks physicality and mobility (and Aston Villa haven’t missed him) and Andrey Santos, a Chelsea reserve.
Carrick was not responsible for the board’s damaging failure to strengthen at centre-back and left-back. Carrick was not responsible for his main striker Benjamin Sesko being injured and the board’s failure to provide him with cover. Carrick was not responsible for the club he loves being in the grip of co-owners like the Glazers whose priorities are focused more on business than the sport. The direction from the top has been negligible, arguably negligent. No real leadership. No expertise.
Carrick may be out of his depth but many United fans sang his name during the painful demise to Bournemouth because they know he cares and they know the problems lie elsewhere. The Stretford End again sang in protest at the wretched Glazers.
Noticeable that there were few songs in support of Bruno Fernandes. He is supposed to be captain, rallying the players, Footballer of the Year, Player of the Year, not arm-waver of the year, underachieving and complaining. Yet Bruno will be at United longer than Carrick.
Carrick was praised for United finishing third last season and getting in the Champions League. But he will doubtless go partly for his own failings and mainly the failings of others. And United will be trapped in this doom loop again. And again until the core problems are addressed in the boardroom - and the Glazers sell up - and flaws in the recruitment department. #MUFC #MUNBOU

Will double down on my view Wilcox and Berrada should be out of the door too. How can they seriously trusted to select another manager?
No way back for Michael Carrick after this. #MUFC humiliated and so the whole sorry cycle starts again.
I don’t think when Carrick said we’d be a different side today that he meant miles worse. It’s laughable. He’s done.
Club captain throws him under the bus. I’d drop him at the weekend.
Manchester United's Como humiliation exposed almost every issue at the club.
There's no swagger synonymous with serial winners of the past. There's no fear factor from opponents. Como controlled the ball and the game, and were rarely put under pressure.
The team currently lacks confidence, chemistry and depth. No one devoid of blame, from the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to Michael Carrick and the players.
Manchester United look passive, adapting to their opponents' styles instead of imposing their own identity.
In recent weeks, we have seen early goals conceded, needless errors, toothless attacking, and not enough work done on or off the ball.
Add to that, players speaking their minds. Lisandro Martinez called out Jason Wilcox before apologising, and Bruno Fernandes said tonight that more tactical bravery is needed.
The seven-game winless run has not only exposed a lack of business over the summer in key areas, but also tested Carrick's own ability to manage during a more congested calendar. Injuries haven't helped, but can't be used as an excuse.
The Manchester United boss is now under pressure, especially with several high-profile managers available, including Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte.
No quick fix, and that includes changing manager. Yet history shows Manchester United managers tend to pay the price.
United sources have always insisted in recent weeks they want to back Carrick, but the same was said about Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, who were both then fired weeks later.

More boos at FT. Carrick will be under the cosh now. Hull was possibly the turning point and he may have gone past the point of no return after tonight. One of the most diabolical defensive performances from #mufc in living memory.

Don’t agree with a lot our club does but we are first when it comes to this. Well done @ManUtd
Think @ManUtd transfer dealings have been inept. Tielemans and Santos were fine starts. Nothing since is worrying.
Pint and a chapter or 2 whilst I wait for the girls to finish watersports. @CNicholson_Edu
Tuchel’s fault. He has to go. Resign now.
FT: England 1 Argentina 2. Lautaro Martínez heads Argentina into the World Cup Final. Two late goals from Lionel Scaloni's side set up a game against Spain on July 19.
Enzo Fernandez equalised with five minutes left with a brilliant strike from distance from Lionel Messi's assist. Messi then crossed for Martinez to win it.
England took the lead through Anthony Gordon's deft finish from Morgan Rogers' quality cross.
And Djed Spence and John Stones defended staunchly as England tried to protect a narrow lead.
But England went into their shell when ahead, and Thomas Tuchel's changes only invited further pressure. In the end, Argentina able to pick off England with the players dropping deeper and deeper. All credit to them for fighting back again. Strong reaction when behind, but England got their tactics wrong in the final half-an-hour of the game.
Another late win for Argentina, who will now have the chance to defend their World Cup title.🏴🇦🇷
