Various features of the Seipin complex remain enigmatic . Some good old-fashioned biochemistry by @KlugYoel helps us understand how the Seipin complex organises... highlighting a role for neutral lipids #lipidtime
And it's out!
Some nice biochemistry reveals how the yeast Seipin compelx organizes in vivo across LD formation

Happy and proud to see this pre-print online. What started out as a worrying observation turned into a side project and then an intriguing investigation.
We show that 5 widely used yeast ‘wild type’ strains differ drastically in their lipid composition!

We are looking for PostDoc with a background in redox biology, experience with cell culture models and basic microscopy imaging to study #lipid #metabolism in the context of #ferroptosis. Interested? Send me your CV and motivation letter by Sep 10th. #ZML @Ferroptosis2306
Highly recommend doing this. We recently wrote a Journal Club for @NatRevMCB and it was a lot of fun!

We have a new postdoc position coming soon :D. To help tease apart the cellular functions of lipid transporters involved in bacterial cell envelope homeostasis... using bacterial genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry. Reach out if you are interested and please RT!
My PhD supervisor Toon de Kroon has a 3.5 year post doc position available @UniUtrecht studying the role of Acc1 and FAS in establishing the lipid acyl chain composition.

Working with Toon was a joy during my PhD. I’d highly recommend joining his lab!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the ONLY thing needed for an initial paper submission should be a single PDF. It should take 30 seconds. All this other metadata nonsense should not hold up the review process and should be handled by the journal anyway.

Spent a year creating 12 stable cell lines for a major experiment, only to find a huge duplication in the original plasmid sequence. Time to trash everything and start from scratch.
Please sequence plasmids fully, even if they come from Addgene!

So so sosososo much. It’s despairing honestly. I’ve literally written 10+ grants in last two years, almost all hitting just short of the ~10% paylines. So much time and productivity completely wasted.
Replying to @ItaiYanai
6 months... I wonder how much scientific creativity is wasted in the US and elsewhere in an endless and unproductive grant writing/reviewing cycle.
Leiden U. starts procedure to fire a professor for inappropriate behavior/misconduct. I want to highlight one of the key findings of the investigation, which applies to academia in general:
The committee’s report shows that there are ‘perverted incentives’ in the system. (1/n)
‘As a scientist, you can lose sight of boundaries. We have to look at that in a broader context as well, because of course this is not only an issue for this faculty and not only for us.’ (3/n)

The BMJ is looking for a freelance statistical reviewer, offering to pay £115/review.
Yes we can professionalise peer review and pay academics for peer review as a service.

I did a thing! Yesterday I uploaded my first senior-author/last-author paper to BioRxiv, and it came online today. Exciting? Yes. Scary? Also! But foremost; I am very proud of it!
Tweetorial will follow (in parts) over the next days! #LipidTime

When I read a review on 'structural characterization of isomeric lipids' by @sarah_e_hancock et al I saw an opportunity. Recent developments in CID/OzID fragmentation mass spectrometry would allow identification of the acyl chain at each sn-position for all species! (7/n)
