An Attorney General who is a genuine heavyweight silk with decades of experience in domestic and international public law? Somebody chosen on the basis of legal acumen and merit rather than their willingness to tell the Prime Minister whatever he wants to hear?
Well I never.
Richard Hermer KC has been appointed Attorney General @attorneygeneral.
He will attend Cabinet.

C4 did its job. But our media has failed for so long to hold power to account.
“Farage is not ‘good copy’. For minorities like me, hearing his ‘ordinary folk’ call our PM a ‘f**cking P*ki’ is terrifying”.

Replying to @RishiSunak
@RishiSunak says he is hurt & angry at @reformparty_uk activist using racist language.
How did he think I felt when his top donor Frank Hester said I “made him want to hate all Black women' and I should be shot?

I understand the novelty of Channel 4 hiring Nadine Dorries but we need to stop MPs being rewarded for inadequacy. You were a failure, Nadine Dorries. You're deserving of no one's attention. You were a shitshow without an interval. You’re an irrelevance. Go away. Thank you.

Eight years ago today, on 16 June 2016, Jo Cox was tragically murdered while on her way to a constituency surgery in Batley and Spen.
In the days that followed, the global wave of grief and solidarity demonstrated that her values were widely shared.

Today on Father’s Day, a Dad in Coventry is mourning the loss of his 12-year old son, Keaton Slater, killed by a hit and run driver.
But road violence is something society doesn’t seem to want to tackle, despite road crashes taking more lives than murder and terrorism combined.
I’ve seen two Plan For Drivers published so far ahead of the election, but no plans to stop 30,000 people being killed or seriously injured each year in road crashes in the UK.
Why not?

RIP Lynn Conway - scientist and trans advocate, whose website was one of the first I found in the late 90s and ultimately lead me to becoming a historian. She died on June 9th 2024 at the age of 86! 🧡

I've seen lots of ppl commenting on Lynn Conway's impact on the field of computers. but as Morgan points out in this thread, if you were a trans person circa 2000, when the internet was still pretty new, she had one of the first comprehensive resource websites for trans people...

When I was editing @WhichUK Computing, I commissioned a brilliant piece from @Psythor on the challenges of digitising archives. What we digitise now might not be readable in a few decades. Digital versions should be for public access, with the paper originals retained.
Are you a history or ancestry enthusiast? We’re proposing to digitise millions of wills dating back to the 1800s, making them easier for the public to access.
Take a fascinating look into our storage archive in Birmingham and have your say: gov.uk/government/news/easie…

It’s been a horrible few days. My family in the Catholic Church in Gaza city are reporting white phosphorous and gunfire into their compound. The bin collector and the janitor have been shot and their bodies are laying outside and remain uncollected. 1/2

So if you were a Chancellor who wanted to get your economy going by giving it a quick boost, cutting income tax for everyone would work, and cutting inheritance tax would be the worst option available to you.
Mike Smart retweeted
The cost of that would have be about £8 billion - near enough the same as the cost of abolishing inheritance tax. But the vast majority of those getting that £250 would have spent it straight away, unlike the person getting the gain from inheritance tax, who would have saved it.

Cop a load of this. 🤦♂️
To have entertained this mob for as long as we have, we have to be right up there, collectively, as one of the thickest nations on the planet.

This is nuts...
62% of the legal decisions made by our politicians went directly against the wishes of UK voters, because a party with a minority of the votes, has a majority of the seats.
Yet people still think the UK is a democracy. 🙄

And there we have it. Harrabin reiterates that he never understood what HS2 was for, and still doesn't. At this stage it's hard to see this as anything other than willful ignorance.
