Susan, that £20m figure isn’t a cheque Sadiq Khan has handed to the Carnival. The reported £20m+ is the overall cost of staging the event, including policing, security, stewarding and clean-up. Khan’s additional City Hall funding this year is £4.66m, specifically for safety and crowd-management improvements. (London City Hall⁠) And here’s the bit you conveniently leave out: Notting Hill Carnival generates nearly £400m for London’s economy every year, according to City Hall, with research estimating over £396m in direct/net economic impact. (London City Hall⁠) By all means debate the public funding. But pretending taxpayers are simply throwing £20m at a party while ignoring the hundreds of millions it generates for the economy is rather more than a little misleading.
