ICYMI: What is financial assurance, and how does Minnesota make sure funds are available to cover a mine’s reclamation and closure?
Our five-part series breaks down how financial assurance works, who determines the amount, what happens if a company goes bankrupt, when obligations end, and how it differs from insurance.

No helium means no new smartphones, laptops, cars, MRI machines, or missiles. This irreplaceable resource is now in short supply as the war with Iran continues. @jon_wertheim reports, Sunday on 60 Minutes.
Numbers matter. So does the story they tell.
The often-cited 17,000 tourism jobs represent a much bigger picture than just the Boundary Waters.
Explore Minnesota’s 2024 data identifies 17,299 leisure and hospitality jobs across eight counties: Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching, Lake, Pine, and St. Louis. Nearly 65% are in St. Louis County alone.
These jobs include restaurants, hotels, resorts, bars, entertainment, and recreation.
And let's be clear about something else.
The people working these jobs are our neighbors, friends, and family. They bring joy to our communities, improve our quality of life, and help make northern Minnesota a wonderful place to call home.
Yet too often, we're told mining and tourism are competing interests, as though one can only succeed at the expense of the other.
But look around. We're already doing both.
We're the people building these communities together, and every one of these jobs matters.
We don't need to pit neighbors against neighbors to have a conversation about our future.
We do need to get the facts right.

Meet Patrick.
He was born on the Iron Range. He's a dad and his family has deep roots in Minnesota's mining community. As a union leader and miner, he's seen firsthand what good mining jobs mean for families like his.
Minnesota mines it right.

Today’s U.S. Senate Vote to pass H.J. Res. 140 is an important step for Minnesota workers, Iron Range communities, and our domestic mineral supply chain.
The agate beautifully captures our region’s geological history - volcanoes, iron, water. It deserves its place on our license plates! Disclosure: my mom lives in Moose Lake, the “Agate Capital of the World” and home to Agate Days so I’m a bit biased ;)
Dear Minnesota,
I’m working to create a new license plate that celebrates the North Shore & our state gemstone, Lake Superior Agate, and could really use your help.
My State Rep. David Gottfried introduced a bill (HF3699) being heard in #mnleg committee next Tuesday, March 10th.
I’ve set up a website AgatePlate.com to share details, but if this idea resonates with you, please consider emailing your representative to share your support by March 9th and RT this post.
