Northern Minnesota moment: Confirmed a young person at church in the morning, bought minnows from him at the bait shop this afternoon. This is exactly how I imagined it would be like to be bishop of this amazing place.

I was grateful to join the Rev. Al Sharpton, and my dear colleague Bishop Mariann Budde, last night to talk about how Minnesota is responding to ICE’s reckless cruelty by mobilizing for love.
Last night on #PoliticsNation, I was joined by Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and Bishop Craig Loya of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota to reflect on the moral and spiritual crisis unfolding in Minnesota. We discussed the killing of 37 year old Alex Pretti, a VA nurse and man of faith, who was shot and killed by ICE federal agents, and the disturbing effort by the administration to mischaracterize his life despite video evidence and the testimony of his family. Both Bishops spoke about how faith communities in Minnesota are responding not with fear, but with love, care, and moral courage. From protecting schools and day cares to supporting families and neighbors, they reminded us that cruelty does not have the final word. At a moment when people are being told not to believe what they see with their own eyes, faith leaders are once again stepping forward to speak truth, defend dignity, and lift up hope.

Weekly message to the diocese. Our call is always to form small communities of witness and resistance. Absalom Jones helps show us the way. open.substack.com/pub/mendin…

Only four more “Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending” days until Christmas. Let us not squander them, team.

That we are commanded to love our enemies is not a strategy to guarantee that all enmity can be overcome, it a reminder that for Christians our lives must be determined by our loves, not our hates. —Stanley Hauwerwas A Better Hope

Today I learned that Mahlon Gilbert, Assistant Bishop of Minnesota from 1886-1900, was a serious angler, wrote for Field and Stream magazine, and once caught three trout on two flies at the same time. So. . .new dreams.

Here’s another thing I really love about the Diocese of Minnesota: when I returned from vacation to attend a diocesan event today, the first thing several clergy asked me was how the fishing was.

We pray every night that the Lord would redeem, guide, and bless his Church. How desperately the world needs to see Jesus in his radiance and his disciples reflecting it with all the gifts of the Spirit in the midst of so much viciousness.

On vacation for the next few weeks, which will mostly consist of fishing and reading. For a fiction deep-dive, do I go with Hillary Mantel’s series, or Hemingway’s greatest hits?

Four years ago bishop today. My heart is flooded with gratitude to God for this life I have been called to. I love this work, and this place, with all that is in me.

Hope everyone still has “Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise” ringing alleluias in your head after a most glorious Feast of the Ascension yesterday.

I’m on retreat with those in the ordination process in the Diocese of Minnesota. Please join me in praying for this holy, courageous, inspiring group of disciples.

Easter is the summit of the God who always does the thing that is too good to be true, and too crazy to believe. Does the church live like we are witnesses of these things?

After Iraq I was so angry. I went to an episcopal church because a friend from Iraq invited me. When I took communion, I felt God’s love even though I couldn’t feel it anywhere else. I’ll never stop being grateful for this night when Jesus gave us himself. – at Pflugerville, TX

I wish people would stop conflating atonement and penal substitution. We need atonement theology. If we don’t, then we don’t need theology, simple as that: then is no problem, and hence nothing to waste time on here. Since however there obviously is a problem, we need atonement.

Preach Easter crazy, dear preachers. Don’t explain it away, make it easy, water it down or convince people it’s interesting. It’s a truly bonkers claim. The scandal and outrage of it is the only thing that can set us free.

A holy day in Minnesota’s beautiful north. Officiated a funeral for a man of deep faith, true gentleness and humility, who did small things with great love. He loved his Lord, he loved his place, he loved his church. God keep your big heart, Frank.
