Magical world where kids' 'dreams come true' – in town with difficult past

In Rotherham, near the town hall, stands a centuries-old gothic former Methodist Church. Get closer, and the swirls of red metal lettering reveals it is no longer a place of worship. Pass underneath the words ‘Emporium of Stories’, and you have entered a magical world. Grimm & Co was imagined by local children asked what they wanted in a town blighted by negative headlines, and facing bleak indices of deprivation.
Young people in Rotherham are used to being on the wrong side of national statistics. In September, the IPPR’s local Youth Opportunity Index named the town as having the fewest suitable entry-level jobs for young people anywhere in Britain - 46 vacancies for every 1,000 young adults, compared with 288 in the Cotswolds. Ninety years ago, 200 men & their MP walked 290 miles from Jarrow to London to highlight the plight of families starving in their town. The Tory PM was “too busy” to meet with them - but next week a historic wrong will be righted.

Next week, Paul Benstead will travel from his home in north-east England to Downing Street, where he will meet the Prime Minister. 90 years ago, Paul’s great-grandad Charles, walked three weeks and 290 miles from Jarrow for the same privilege. But when the exhausted dockworker reached London on October 26 1936, alongside 200 weary men and their inspirational Labour MP Ellen Wilkinson, the Tory Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin was “too busy” to meet with them.
Political calls from Reform's Robert Jenrick for "lethal force" ignore the horrific realities driving families across the Channel. Refugees are humans often coming from war & trauma. We need more people like The Pickwell Foundation & Waves Wahines - two amazing coastal community projects who are forging friendships and teaching refugee kids to surf. youtube.com/watch?v=cP5JCtqO…

Dehumanising people who cross the channel has always been at the heart of all Farage's Trojan horses.
And now, a Reform government would use "lethal force" against unarmed 'migrants'.
The antidote to all that hate is this. People who cross the channel are humans.

Over 200 people who are experiencing the personal cost of the cost-of-living crisis will meet their MPs in Parliament on Tuesday, ahead of Andy Burnham's upcoming first budget as PM

Paul who cares for his adult son Keith – who has autism, epilepsy & is non-verbal – in respite care, will travel to London. "I love being a carer, but being an unpaid carer can be a nightmare. I have had to go without food. When I was a child my parents had the electric cut off during winter, so I’ll do anything that puts the bills & my family first."
