“For our Group, macroeconomic cooperation must strengthen countries’ ability to invest in their people and transform their economies. Its value should be reflected in reliable public services, productive businesses and decent employment. (…). The African Group supports the intergovernmental process at the United Nations envisaged in the Sevilla Commitment to make recommendations for closing gaps in the debt architecture and exploring options to address debt sustainability.”

Angola President, His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, was the first african leader to deliver his Statement in day 1 of UNGA’s 81 General Debate on September 22,
Main Takeaways from President João Lourenço’s Speech:
1- *Restore the UN’s role in maintaining peace*: “Our appeal is for us to act with wisdom and courage to restore the central role of the United Nations in its responsibility and irreplaceable mission in maintaining world peace.”
Invest in African peace efforts: “We call for the effective implementation of Security Council Resolution 2719, which must ensure predictable, adequate and sustainable financing for African Union-led peace support operations authorized by the United Nations Security Council, because investing in Africa’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts is also an investment in international peace and security.”
2- Mark Angola’s 50 years at the UN:“This session of the General Assembly is of particular significance to my country, as it is taking place in the year in which we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic of Angola’s admission as a full member of the United Nations Organization, in December 1976.”
3- Reform global governance: It is therefore becoming increasingly pressing and urgent to undertake a profound reform of the United Nations Security Council, in which Africa, Latin America and Asia should be adequately represented as permanent members with all the powers inherent therein.”
4- Make development financing fairer: “African countries spend far more resources on the exorbitant costs of debt servicing than they are able to invest in health, education and infrastructure development programmes.”
5- Address climate and digital inequality: “This situation clearly illustrates the need to establish predictable, affordable and additional climate financing, without further aggravating the debt of developing countries.” On digital cooperation, he added: “I believe there is a need to strengthen North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation, in order to make the digital revolution an instrument of inclusion, sovereignty and development, rather than a source of dependence and inequality.”
End the embargo against Cuba: “We once again call for an end to the embargo against Cuba.”
6- Choose diplomacy over force: “No weapon is more powerful than diplomacy, since all others are used only to destroy lives, infrastructure, dreams and life plans, whereas diplomacy is the only weapon that exists to unite, repair, build and save lives, peoples, nations and humanity.”
