Migrants are now being smuggled out of Britain to Spain – the first time a smuggling route to any specific country has ever used the UK in this way, so they can exploit Pedro Sánchez’s massive amnesty and dodge deportation.

A terrible way to end the career of the greatest ever footballer, a real contrast to Messi’s end with international football. He definitely had another nations league campaign in him.
At least I don’t have to support Portugal anymore. The nations league is coming home 🏴
2016 MP Andy Burnham: “The status quo full free movement was defeated at the ballot box… We need an immigration system that allows for greater control, reduces the numbers coming here… and doesn’t allow people’s wages to be undercut.”
2026 PM Andy Burnham: Wants an “honest discussion” on restoring free movement as part of rejoining the EU or single market.
What changed?
What an incredible story
May 5, 1945. Hitler has been dead for five days. The war in Europe is almost over.
In a castle in the Austrian Alps, American soldiers, German soldiers, and a group of elderly French prisoners grab rifles and get ready to fight the SS.
Together.
The castle was called Schloss Itter. The Nazis had turned it into a prison for very important people. Not ordinary prisoners. Trophies.
Inside were two former prime ministers of France, Paul Reynaud and Édouard Daladier. Two of France's top generals, Maxime Weygand and Maurice Gamelin. A famous tennis champion, Jean Borotra. And the older sister of Charles de Gaulle.
As the Reich collapsed in early May, the SS guards panicked and ran. The prisoners suddenly found themselves in charge of a castle, with weapons left behind, and a serious problem.
Waffen-SS units were still roaming the area. Fanatics who would gladly kill them all.
They needed help. Fast.
One of the castle's prisoners, a Yugoslav handyman, slipped out on a bicycle to find the Americans. Separately, a German army officer named Major Josef Gangl also went looking for them.
Gangl was a Wehrmacht officer who had turned against the Nazis and was secretly working with the Austrian resistance. He wanted to protect the prisoners too.
He found an American tank commander named Captain Jack Lee.
Lee was 27, tough, cigar chewing, and willing to do something insane. With a single Sherman tank and a handful of American soldiers, he drove up into the mountains alongside Gangl and a few of his German troops.
They reached the castle on May 4.
The French prisoners were not exactly thrilled to see a tiny rescue force. They had expected an army. Instead they got a few Americans, a few Germans, and one tank.
The next morning, the SS attacked.
Somewhere between 100 and 150 Waffen-SS troops hit the castle with machine guns, mortars, and anti-tank weapons. The defenders fought back from the walls and windows. Americans and Germans side by side.
The French prisoners refused to hide. Some of them, including Reynaud, picked up weapons and joined in.
The Sherman tank was knocked out. The defenders were running out of ammunition. It looked like the castle would fall.
Then Jean Borotra, the tennis star, volunteered to make a run for it. He jumped the wall, slipped past the SS, and sprinted through the countryside to find American reinforcements.
He found them. And he insisted on coming back with them to finish the fight.
During the battle, Major Gangl saw Paul Reynaud exposed to gunfire and moved to pull him to safety. A sniper shot Gangl dead.
He had survived the whole war as a German soldier, only to die defending French prisoners from the SS in its final days.
That afternoon, the American relief force arrived and broke the attack. The SS were scattered and captured. The prisoners were saved.
Jack Lee received the Distinguished Service Cross. In Austria, Josef Gangl is remembered as a hero, and a street is named after him.
It is believed to be the only battle of the war where American and German soldiers fought together on the same side.
Staggering numbers for Flávio Bolsonaro, who may well just win the Brazilian presidency without going to the second round!
School bans high-fives. Kid gets punished for celebrating. Welcome to Britain 2026.
Pupil’s have been sanctioned for giving contact including high-five after it “broke” a school non-contact rule.

Good riddance. My mum wanted me to stand for it when I was 16. The problem with it then remains the same problem as it is now, all the showboating with many words of not much substance, it represents everything wrong with modern politics.

Anyone claiming the Falkland Islands are not sovereign British territory should be considered hostile to the interests of the British people.
How very Starmer. Waits until he’s enjoyed a leisurely summer after being booted from No.10, then decides the humble life of a backbench MP is suddenly beneath him. All that talk about being “wholeheartedly” in the Labour movement? Turns out it only applied when he had the keys to Downing Street.
If Trump wants to play games over the Falklands, then we should equally ‘review’ the United States use over Chagos, Akrotiri, and mainland RAF bases.
So called ‘academia’ placing Gloucester in the north of England is just ridiculous. Telegraph readers know better.

Don’t let one of Britain’s last WWI Q-ships vanish into the scrapyard. HMS President (ex-Saxifrage) helped fight the U-boat threat and later served as a London training ship. The Q-Ship Society is racing to save, move, moor and restore her as a museum. Please share and donate if you can: gofund.me/Move-Moore-Restore @qshiptrust

For the 573rd f**king time, has anyone who fumes that something is "a flagrant breach of the Good Friday Agreement" actually read the b*****ding Good Friday Agreement? It has to be the most misquoted document in Western Civilization, and that's saying something.
He's the Prime Minister. The Agreement - that the UK, the Irish Government, UUP, SDLP, SF, ALL etc. all signed up to - states categorically that the UK Secretary of State (a member of this guys cabinet) has control over when to call a border poll. The Agreement states that it will only be considered by the SoS if they can see sufficient support for constitutional change. Every single census, poll and election shows, without doubt, that there isn't sufficient support for constitutional change. There's significant support - very vocal and organised support - but not sufficient support. Certainly not when the agreement states that change rests on 50%+1.
So, as jarring as it is for reality to slap you up the face in a Manc accent, he is entirely right that a border poll is off the table. Please people, regardless of your constitutional aspirations, try to live in reality.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out calling a referendum on Irish unification, describing a border poll as "off the table".
He was speaking during his first official visit to Northern Ireland as prime minister.

Rest in peace, Peter Cullen.
Hearing that he’s gone is gutting. OP wasn’t just a character he played, for so many of us, that voice was the character.
TFP will always be my favourite work of his. I genuinely cannot imagine this franchise without him.
GCSE'S and A-levels need to go back to 'Letter Grading', not all this number nonsense. A "9" doesn't have the same ring as an A*
