Rohan R of 20th MSc Wildlife Science (2024-26), as part of his dissertation titled “Understanding Habitat Use and its Drivers for Small Carnivores in the Nilgiris” studied the habitat use, and structural drivers of the small carnivore assemblage, along with their spatial and temporal patterns in the Nilgiris, along with documenting local knowledge on the Nilgiri Marten in the Nilgiris. The results of the study signify that the different small carnivore species respond similarly to habitat variables, showing a non linear relationship with its drivers. Distinct temporal and spatial segregation also exists within the small carnivore assemblage. Two previously undocumented local names for the Nilgiri Marten were also reported.

As WII marks its Foundation Day, we pause to honour the journey of an institution built on science, service and commitment to India’s wildlife. A profound interaction with former Directors enriched the occasion, as their wisdom, memory and vision reminded us that institutions grow through continuity, conviction, equal opportunity and collective purpose.

A new study from Maharashtra found that while tigers, leopards, and dholes share the same forests, they use landscapes in very different ways. Dholes are the most at risk among the three carnivores. @randomcards reports.
