#MondayBlogs šŸ’„ S*bstack vs Blogs: Why This Debate Might Be Missing the Point | by Rachel Thompson @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/SubstackVSBlogs The real issue isn’t the platform. It’s how readers discover you, trust you, and come back... Lately, writers have been heatedly discussing Substack vs. blogs, as if one is the clear winner. Maybe yes, maybe no. The topic is certainly relevant and worth discussing, and a kind writer sent me this question. It’s a biggie, so let’s dig in. Some people insist that Substack replaces blogging entirely. Others say serious writers still need a traditional website and blog, AND a Substack. It feels like too much. You’d think we were debating politics instead of publishing tools, but the truth is a lot less dramatic and doesn’t require a steaming hot shower afterward. Most people in this debate are simply talking about different parts of the same marketing puzzle... Click to read the rest (always FREE to read and subscribe)! geni.us/SubstackVSBlogs

#MondayBlogs Why Writers Should Watch "Station Eleven:" Storytelling, World-Building, & the Star Trek Motto That Defines It | @RachelintheOC geni.us/StationElevenSubstac… When you hear the words ā€œpandemic dystopia,ā€ you might expect chaos, violence, and endless bleakness, or just think back a few years to our global pandemic. We lived that. And yes, Station Eleven (HBO’s adaptation of Emily St. John Mandel’s multi-award-winning novel) gives us all that, available now on Prime Video and elsewhere. What makes it unforgettable, and why every writer should watch, is how it insists on beauty, art, and human connection even as the world crumbles. This isn’t a survival story in the usual sense. It’s a story about what endures when everything else is stripped away. It’s a woven tapestry of detail that, upon repeated watchings, becomes even more and more meaningful (okay, okay, I’ve already watched it five times and am going for my sixth. Let me live.) šŸ’„ Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, GeniusLink. I love bothšŸ’„ (affiliate link). šŸ“• Station Eleven: Book vs. Show Emily St. John Mandel’s novel and HBO’s series tell the same story in different ways. The book is quiet and interior, built from fragments, memory, and subtle world-building. It asks the reader to piece things together slowly. The show is expansive and emotional, lingering on visuals, silence, and character arcs that were only hinted at in the novel. Some minor characters in the book become central on screen, shifting the story’s balance, and of course, there’s artistic license, with some characters written out completely, and others taking on different characteristics. For writers, the lesson is this: a story isn’t fixed. The same core idea can take on powerful forms, each revealing different truths. The show is adapted from the book, so there are clear differences. Read more: geni.us/StationElevenSubstac… Always free to read and subscribe!

#MondayBlogs 8 Writing and Publishing Lessons I Learned From Writing 8 Books | by @BadRedheadMedia geni.us/8Lessons What eight books taught me about fear, rejection, marketing, and the writing life...so far. I've written eight books as of this date: self-pub’d, hybrid, had an agent, directed a hybrid imprint, worked with two small boutique publishers, and have owned my own book marketing biz since 2011. I work in the industry. You’d think I’d understand how publishing works by now. And I do, mostly. Yet every time I publish a book, some ridiculous, hopeful little part of me still thinks: Maybe this is the one everyone will chitchat about at work. Maybe I can just eat bonbons and hope my book sells millions. Maybe readers will magically find it cause that always happens… I know better. We all intuitively know better. And hope is not a plan. And yet, we all still want ā€˜it,’ whatever ā€˜it’ means. Some of my books have won awards, some have sold better than others, and some found readers long after I stopped checking rankings. I’ve written humor, three books for writers (marketing, SEO, and the dreaded branding), and three deeply personal books about childhood sexual abuse, trauma, and healing, and been included in several anthologies. Writing each one affected me differently. I learned plenty, though not always while writing; sometimes it took years to understand what each book taught me. šŸ’„ Shout-out to my exclusive advertising sponsor, the always-free Booklinker (universal book links—so helpful!), and the paid tool, GeniusLink. I love bothšŸ’„ (affiliate link). These aren’t my truths about developing character arcs, the politics of commas, or the single best way to market your work that works 100% of the time (if you find it, please share). These are the truths I’ve developed from writing, publishing, and marketing eight books of my own, and hundreds of others. Read more: geni.us/8Lessons Always Free to read and subscribe!

#MondayBlogs šŸ”µ I Was Scammed. My Father's Response Freed Me. What he gave me was better than advice—and better than money | @andrewdkaufman ow.ly/vzMJ50ZeUzq For much of my life, I thought what I needed most from my father was his approval. It took one of the biggest mistakes of my life to realize I needed something else entirely. Chasing a Different Life I was thirty years old, six months removed from finishing my Ph.D. at Stanford, and completely burned out on academic life. For years, I had immersed myself in Russian literature and a dissertation that seemed endless. I’d done everything I was supposed to do. Yet I was miserable. Now I wanted something entirely different. I wanted to be seen. Graduate school had left me exhausted and uncertain, and success on a larger stage seemed like a shortcut to proving myself once and for all. So when an opportunity appeared that seemed to offer exactly that, I took it. While working in communications for a Silicon Valley startup, I’d developed a fascination with acting and media. My job was to get other people onto radio and television shows. Secretly, I wanted to be the person on those shows... Click to read the rest. Free to read and subscribe. ow.ly/vzMJ50ZeUzq
