2/ And yes, Australia has never been the egalitarian paradise we pretend it was. Plenty of us have spent our lives on the wrong end of that supposed fair go.
But surely the answer is to make it real, not abandon it altogether.
I don’t want to live in a country where we have to check someone’s politics before deciding whether their suffering matters.
I want an Australia where we look out for each other, where nobody is a second-class citizen, and where basic human decency isn’t conditional on whether we like someone.
Including the people we cordially detest.
It shouldn’t be that fucking hard.

News you may not have heard about this past week.
* A 73-year-old man is charged with 55 offences, with police alleging he abused 29 children across 25 years at the now-closed Magill training centre in South Australia.
* Sexual violence, domestic violence and other offences against women are soaring in Australia, the annual Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commission's report says. The report says homicides are decreasing but I believe this is wrong. My own count of femicide and child homicide shows we are increasing each year. The way the government counts femicide fails to capture all deaths. The official data precludes misidentified homicides, deliberately disappeared women, deaths that attract lesser charges than murder, inadequate police investigations and suicide due to domestic violence, sexual violence and other abuses.
* A Sydney woman has revealed her former partner was able to control her Tesla remotely. She says the man - a domestic violence abuser - controlled the speed, temperature settings and lock.
* A WA Police officer pushed an Aboriginal woman to the ground, with the footage showing he walked up to her and shoved her for no reason.
* An Austrian woman was raped to death by her abusive husband and the many men who paid him to take part. He drugged her and sold her online, calling her dead meat. The woman's teen daughter found her body. The man told police she died during 'rough sex'.
* In the UK, a man is accused of drugging and raping his female partner and inviting other men to rape her as well.
