While I am overal glad Lula has won over Bolsonaro, 80 is too old to be president (at the risk of sounding ageist). Move into an advisory role and mentor some fresh blood.
Just checking my emails after getting back from the trip and it's great to see several dozen missed registration reminders... I'm looking forward to seeing all the work my students haven't completed on Monday.
Back in Lima. The heat and humidity hit hard leaving the air conditioned airport after a week at altitude in the dry air. I do not miss the humidity, but I am looking forward to not having chapped lips! #internationalteacher
I posted my Misti photo prematurely. View from our hotel in #Arequipa this morning. Just gorgeous, and the coffee from la selva made it all the more better. #Peru #internationalteacher
And how could I forget el Misti? I have wanted to see this volcano for the last 20 years - amazing to finally lay eyes on it! Such a perfect (albeit dangerous) stratovolcano.
#Arequipa is a stunning city. I've had a great day here with grade 7. So many beautiful old buildings, lots of alpacas and some delicious food! I've decided I'm coming back as soon as I've got my immigration sorted so I can explore at my own pace.

So much of the coverage of Brazil's election has focused on the southeast, so I decided to fly north to the Amazon, to Mucajaí - the most Bolsonarista town in Brazil's most Bolsonarista state - to understand what the vote means for the rainforest region + its inhabitants theguardian.com/world/2026/o…
The same technology has been used here for millennia. The only thing that's changed are the building materials. The river further up the mountain feeds an extensive network of irrigation channels and sluices, which farmers use to irrigate their terraces. #geographyteacher #Peru
One of my students just described @MerlinBirdID as Pokémon for adults, and that feels very apt! I'm on the hunt for giant hummingbirds today, and I've told my students there will be a prize for whoever spots one first.
It's a #geographyteacher thing, taking photos of stuff that will make good examples for lessons wherever we travel. Some great biological and physical weathering here in the mountains.

Of course! These are beautiful. Are they geckos or anoles? I'm not on holiday, but I've been taking photos of all the cool bugs and showing my students. Some are feigning interest.
I call this pair of photos, 'Fireworks of the Tropics'. This is the #Peru I came for! #Arequipa #geographyteacher #internationalteacher
My first alpaca and fruit bat in #Peru! It's amazing here, about one hour outside of #Arequipa. The nature and history is amazing. I'm in #geographyteacher heaven. I have so many photos! #internationalteacher
Blimey. We've been tracking #ElNiño closely in grade 8, and students will be starting a GIS project on the topic next week. It's been pretty wild. I do miss the rains...
#ElNiño: Después de un intenso calor que superó los 36°C en #Chulucanas (Piura), cae una lluvia.🌧️🌧️🌧️
I have a tradition when travelling that I read a book set in the place I'm going to. I couldn't find one set in Arequipa (strangely - it's a major city - I'm open to recommendations!). So, I'm attempting my first novel by Llosa, who is at least from Arequipa!
Tomorrow is going to be interesting. I am supposed to be going to Arequipa, which I'm excited about, but I am not entirely convinced they will let me on the plane because I am over my visa and still don't have my residency. School assure me it will be okay. We will see!
This is an issue in Peru, which has a reporting system I really cannot get my head around. I've got actual assessment data on my students to support my grades, but I appear to be one of the few teachers who does.
