A screenshot shot from a NYT article on encouraging boys to read. The pendulum swinging is frustrating: I remember being explicitly told to NOT assign whole books. Jumping on bandwagons has consequences.

Moving on from old friendships and creating new ones is a natural part of life. 🧡

ALT Did You Know? In sixth grade, only a third of friendships endure through the school year, research shows. By 12th grade, just 1 percent of middle school friendships remain intact. Most friendships aren't built to last. To help kids preserve existing friendships, consider letting close friends chat and work together periodically, while also helping middle schoolers understand that moving on from old friendships and creating new ones is just a natural part of life. Agreed! Reflectively persevere when not successful YET.

A3: use words like “yet”, “the next step”, “craft”, and “process” to encourage students to expand the paradigm to go beyond finishing something and being “good”/“bad” at it. This celebrates the process of learning or completing tasks rather than an end result with judgment.

Framing, or how teachers introduce new concepts and tasks to students, is the focus of Q3. Framing can steer students to a fixed or growth mindset. It helps students feel free to be a work in progress as they learn. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

I encourage a positive and safe classroom environment for my students. I use positive language and give positive feedback to my students to encourage their learning and appreciate their mistakes to go further . Our slogan is “Mistakes are okay” ; we learn through challenge.
