שמו היה חאלד עבד אל-והאב. הוא היה בן 31, מוסלמי תוניסאי עשיר שלמד אמנות וארכיטקטורה בניו יורק ודיבר גרמנית שוטפת. קציני נאצים סמכו עליו. הם הזמינו אותו לארוחות הערב שלהם.

עשר שנים אחר כך, בתו פאיזה ישבה בבית קפה בפריז וקראה עיתון יום ראשון כשהיא נתקלה בריאיון עם היסטוריון אמריקאי שתיאר ערבי תוניסאי שהסתיר 25 יהודים ב-1942.
