Excited to share something from my previous postdoc with @mgalactus, a collaboration with the @JoergLab using lab evolution to see how different bacterial species develop resistance to programmable antibiotics:

The increased mutation rate of DNA-repair–deficient mutators accelerates resistance evolution in bacteria and cancer. In a great collaboration with @MulkernAdam, we find that DNA-damaging antibiotics can turn this advantage into a liability—but only for certain genotypes.
Cancer therapies exploit DNA repair defects to kill tumours. We asked whether the same logic could constrain antibiotic resistance evolution...
biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
We paired antibiotics with DNA-damaging agents and evolved a panel of E. coli repair mutants using high-throughput evolution at EMBL. Some hypermutators were constrained, but the strategy only works if you match the damage to the specific repair defect...
Evolution-aware therapies need to be genotype-directed!
Thanks to @StefanBassler, @wtmatlock, @typaslab, @craigmaclean
Still buzzing after the @MicrobioSoc meeting on 'Understanding and Predicting Microbial Evolutionary Dynamics' last week. It was great to connect with so many people who share the same type of science. Big thanks to the organisers for the opportunity to present my research too!
Had a short but sweet visit to Zürich to speak at @ETH_en. Many thanks to @phagemuffin and @AHarms485!
What a month...I spent June in the US at the @CSHL Advanced Bacterial Genetics course and then the @GordonConf Molecular Mechanisms in Evolution! I met so many cool people along the way — special shoutout to my course lab partner, Max!
Hopped over to Northern Ireland last week to give a talk at @QUBelfast for their AMR seminar series. Thanks very much to @WheatleyRM, @LindaOyama, and @sharonhuws for hosting me!
Wrapped up 2024 with the @TypasLab in Heidelberg @embl, doing some evolution experiments with @StefanBassler. Had an incredible time and looking forward to an exciting year of science in 2025!

Stress-testing #asobiotics…🦠 @MulkernAdam & @mgalactus from TWINCORE, in collaboration with #HIRI’s @JoergLab, have employed in-vitro laboratory evolution to study how different bacteria develop resistance to programmable antibiotics. Check out their preprint to learn more. 👇
A cool post about the paper too by @mgalactus: microbial-pangenomes-lab.org…
Big shoutout to these 3 from the MacLean Lab, currently in SF, who just launched Evolvere BioSciences on

A short thread 🧵:
Had a fun day visiting @AdamWinnifrith at @TheCrick and got to check out their epic lab setup!
Thanks to @WheatleyRM for organising an excellent AMR & Microbiome workshop @magdalenoxford
After an amazing few years in Germany, I'll soon be starting a postdoc in the MacLean lab @UniofOxford 🧬 Thanks to @mgalactus for the mentorship and I'm very excited for what's ahead!
