Available now: Manifesto for Generative AI in Higher Education – The Book Project
pressbooks.pub/mfaihe/
A timely and thought-provoking collection exploring how generative AI is reshaping teaching, learning, and academic practice.
I applaud @WabKinew for this response to hyperscale #AI data centres. As Prof Baragar says, "We haven't got a good body of evidence…about the long-term impacts and spin-off effects that may or may not arise" cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/… #cdnpoli #EnviroWeek (is every week)
New working definition of authentic assessment: “design of tasks that prepare learners to navigate complex, messy, ambiguous, unpredictable situations with informed integrity, while also making appropriate choices about whether and how to use AI tools.” #onlinelearning #highered
With the rise of GenAI, widening social inequalities, and rapid technological change, COL’s newest Knowledge Series publication explores how authentic assessment has become a practical necessity for ensuring assessment addresses both academic integrity and practical application in complex, real-world situations. So important to explore “social presence’s offensive, not defensive, role in keeping generative AI from hindering collaboration and connectedness in course communities” #onlinelearning #highered #HigherEducation #GenAI #GenerativeAI
#EducationSciencesMDPI invites you to submit a paper to the Special Issue "Social Presence and Collaboration in Online Learning Environments in an Age of Generative AI".

“The stakes are high: if AI is irredeemably colonial, education must resist its use; if it can be turned and tuned toward decolonial praxis, the implications for pedagogy, knowledge production, and justice-oriented education are transformative.” #GenAI #HigherEd #OnlineLearning

ALT For a Student Who Used AI to Write a Paper Now I let it fall back in the grasses. I hear you. I know this life is hard now. I know your days are precious on this earth. But what are you trying to be free of? The living? The miraculous task of it? Love is for the ones who love the work. —Joseph Fasano

As advanced as AI seems, there's something anti-intellectual about it. It treats thinking as an obstacle on the path to "the answer." But for the intellectual, thinking isn't a means to an end. It's the thing itself.
No wonder so many thoughtful people hate it.
"Intention–behaviour gap in self-regulated learning…is often treated as motivational or volitional failure. link.springer.com/article/10… shows even well-informed students may default to ineffective strategies because they are automatically cued & resistant to change" via @C_Hendrick

Neuro-myths such as Learning Styles are the ultimate litmus test of a profession and it's one that education keeps failing again and again.
Replying to @C_Hendrick
My university's Academic Resource Center offers learning style assessment to our students. I have made literally dozens of attempts to get them to stop, to no avail.

I am going through my angry phase of AI (it comes in waves, but I'm at a particularly deep phase of anger right now). I can't stand how much people diminish the reproduction of bias and occasional hallucinations. Why? Why does this not matter to some people?
John Murray retweeted
Typical Silicon Valley (pseudo-) logic: let's just pretend this tech is magic, and that its costs don't matter.
Yes, there are many meaningful climate-positive applications of AI, but we urgently need to address the environmental impacts of (superfluous) generative AI.
