Nestled along the serene banks of the Krishna River in Khidrapur, Kolhapur district, Kopeshwar Temple (meaning “the angry god; rooted in the legend of Lord Shiva’s fury following Sati’s self-immolation) stands as a remarkable testament to the rich heritage of the historic region of Koppam.
Believed to have originated in the 7th century CE during the reign of the Chalukyas, the temple saw major developments in the 12th century under the Shilahara rulers, with subsequent additions by the Yadavas of Devagiri.
Its layout comprises the Swargamandapa, Sabhamandapa, Antarala, and Garbhagriha, each adorned with intricately carved pillars, striking elephant motifs, and finely detailed sculptures. Kannada inscriptions found within the complex offer valuable insights into its historical patronage.
