On October 13, 1776, the three-day battle at Valcour Island ended when Benedict Arnold ordered his remaining ships run aground and set them on fire to keep them from falling into British hands. The Americans lost that battle, but Arnold bought George Washington time and prevented the British from attacking him on two fronts. In the summer before the battle, Arnold directed the construction of a scrappy fleet to defend Lake Champlain. A historical marker in Skenesborough, now Whitehall, New York, commemorates that fleet as the “Birthplace of the United States Navy.” Though much has changed about the American Navy since those days, some scrappiness still seems essential to building its vessels. Because our trade schools have struggled to train people in the specialized skills required to build those ships, shipbuilders have established their own apprenticeship programs. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, #Mississippi, for example, offers such a program and graduated some 70 apprentices in March of this year. Read my latest:

Replying to @NIHDirector_Jay
@NIHDirector_Jay deserves praise – and gets it from @NASorg, which has early and often sounded the alarm on irreproducibility in scientific research – for his allocation of NIH funds to address the replication crisis with multiple programs and prizes. nas.org/statement/nih-takes-…

I am indifferent to whether a course could be delivered by AI (they are PhD level! Everyone says so!) but if a university wants to resist accepting transfer credit for an AI delivered courses, new rules will be needed. nas.org/blogs/article/how-se…

"Ensuring institutional autonomy is essential to any reform of higher education ... The proposed Course Identity and Transfer Integrity Act would grant the institution accepting the credit authority to accept it without a presumption of equivalence." nas.org/blogs/article/how-se…

My new report with @NASorg shows a slew of suspicious devices in China, Iran, and Russia hovering around a small college working on missile technology. This report will hopefully be the first of many. Master thread below; link to article here: nas.org/report/checking-the-…
Three years ago, my colleagues @NASorg broke the story: Alfred University, a small college in upstate NY, was one of the very few institutions left to host a Confucius Institute, a node in the Chinese Communist Party's international influence operations and espionage activities. 1 dailysignal.com/2023/06/01/n…

.@Keith_Whitaker_ has written a lovely essay on Nathan Hale—on youth, promise, failure, memory, and the strange way a few final words can give meaning to an otherwise unsuccessful deed. Well worth reading.

When institutions prioritize 'equity' over competence, standards are inevitably lowered for everyone.
Are our medical schools racist and obsessed with DEI, not meritocracy? Otago University has a 'Maori Equity Applicant' category, which accepts students with HSFY scores of 65% and above vs >93% for general non-Maori applicants. Also 92% of Maori applicants get offers vs only 31% of non-Maori applicants, despite non-Maori applicants having higher HSFY scores 😳 Is this racist, and how can it improve the quality of our medical students? 🤔 *HSFY is 'Health Sciences First Year' course #familyfirstnz

Nathan Hale’s spy mission failed. His last words made him immortal. On this day in 1776, Hale was hanged by the British after being captured behind enemy lines. @Keith_Whitaker_ reflects on Hale’s brief life, his Yale education, and why words can sometimes outlive deeds.
