On 5/18 I was hit by a tornado. A full analysis video is live now on YouTube. I want this video to be informative and helpful to others, especially newer chasers. I hope everyone can learn something from our mistakes, or reinforce safety in the field.

Hurricane #Polo has my jaw on the floor with this perfect eye structure. Incredible.
On 5/18, I was hit by a tornado near Blue Rapids, KS. 10 years without incident. I’m ashamed and traumatized. It wasn’t my plan to end up in this situation. It was the result of many mistakes. An analysis video will be on YT this weekend. I hope some can learn from our failure.
Let me be clear: this was a major mess up. I don’t want to chase clout, likes, followers, etc. I want to use this incident to show chasers(esp newer ones) what happens when you plan poorly and play dangerously. I hope the longer video is helpful. One request I have:
That's about as textbook of an August waterspout outbreak as it gets. Would go if not for work! Get up to the lake if you're close. #ohwx
After this year there will be articles about how tornado alley has shifted exclusively to Illinois.

So it seems we had a tri-state tornado yesterday morning...but it occurred from perhaps the shortest path-length possible. An EF-1 tornado started in Lee County, Iowa, crossed into Clark County, Missouri, and ended in Hancock County, Illinois...for a path of just 1.34 miles.

This was the view of supercell that produced the rain wrapped tornado in Charleston, Illinois last night. With my years of experience I decided to flee to the south and move well away from both the tornado and RFD.
Many storm chasers could not escape and were overtaken by this storm as it moved quickly through the large town. It's a matter of time until there is a mass casualty incident where there is no escape.
I will say this as clearly as I can.
"It's ok to be scared of storms and to run".
Some storms have a mind of their own and shall decide your fate for you.
There is NO shame in fleeing and missing out on the next viral weather video.
If your senses tell you to run, you should have made the decision at least 30 seconds earlier.
After this storm moved through town I, @VinceWaelti Greg Ansel and other chasers returned and assisted assessing damaged buildings and clearing the roads supporting the local emergency response.
Well done to all the chasers on other storms across the state who had the training and will to stop and assist those in need following these tornado events.

Reminder to newer storm chasers… high-end severe wx and tornado days are often high-end on the difficulty to chase scale.
Between numerous to widespread storms traveling at highway speeds, even the most seasoned have extremely low odds of a successful chase tomorrow.
