Dedicated to reporting mainstream and esoteric aspects of football. Football is art. I like the numbers and love to count things. But I love the art more.

At practice would sit down on the ground behind the offense, no shoes, smoking,
The Ernie Zampese story was such a classic. Here’s John Madden talking about him back in day.

One of Night Train Lane's 14 INTs in 1952 Lane playing off ... zone, Ram rush 4 ... more modern of a defense than most might have thought LA vs Pitt Bonus, seagull flies through the frame. I think he was open.

Red—if the jar is *actually* 51-49. One draw doesn’t change the higher-probability choice. The issue is whether the model’s 51 is real. There is math behind that. Expected-points models have documented problems. Brill, Yee, Deshpande & Wyner (2024)—statisticians at Wharton and Wisconsin—showed they suffer from selection bias, overfitting, no uncertainty quantification, and ignoring that plays within a drive aren’t independent, so a small reported edge can be noise. Szymanski (2020), a sports economist at Michigan, argued that outside baseball much of the field still looks like alchemy: opaque and short on rigorous evidence. Faraway (2017), a statistician, noted the zero-sum reality—any edge is eventually competed away. When the number is 98%, those issues usually don’t matter. At 51%, they do. Shanahan’s hesitation isn’t just “I only get one shot.” It’s that the jar the analytics department is handing him may not be the one they claim. Extremes in anything are usually off. Middle ground exists in this life -- analytics Math™ may not be the kind of applied math that builds bridges or gets crafts to the moon.
If Kyle had to bet his life on predicting whether he chooses a red ball or a blue ball from a jar, and he was informed there are 51 red balls and 49 blue, which color should he predict?

Trick question -- does card counting work, give player advantage over the house, and by making more money than otherwise playing?

My work-in-progress formula does things on a per/game basis plus a TD percentage, 4 categories, scored to 100 being the highest. Could use work, but that 20% is 20% of the formula ... Hutson still on top Yes, I know, it's flawed; yes I know Rice is not #1 -- he would be but his last few years dragged his per-game averages lower. And yes, I know, many people could do better. I wish they would!
