Saturday Headlines (Nov 7): Notes from Elliotte… • Pittsburgh wants to get younger, faster and make opportunities for their young players. • Chicago has become very active. They own some 1sts and 2nds from other teams that are available and are getting asked about young players and prospects. • Montreal is operating under the impression that Michael Hage and Alexander Zharovsky will be available to them at the end of their seasons. • There is noise around Jordan Binnington. He is a UFA and has a 10 team no trade list.

When asked if Kucherov’s trade request is a negotiation ploy, Elliotte says all the information he’s gathered tells him that if Kucherov says something then he means it.
Last week, NHL Network insider @FriedgeHNIC reported shocking news that Nikita Kucherov was requesting a trade from Tampa Bay. Today, he joined NHL Now to provide the latest update on Kucherov's future with the Lightning. 📺: #NHLNow weekdays at 5 PM ET on NHL Network

The Fan Hockey Show (Nov 6): Elliotte says there are some teams out there whose seasons are getting to a point where they might have to make a move. He says "Do we see a team that kind of makes a trade where they're like, we didn't think we'd be in this position this year and we got to do something."

Agreed. A dollar of cap space is worth the same in every market. Florida's tax break belongs to the player, not the team. What surprises me is how nobody talks about the RCA. Canadian teams can put part of a player's salary into a Retirement Compensation Arrangement. Once he retires outside Canada, he withdraws it at roughly 25%. Net result: the same tax as "no tax" Florida, sometimes less. And far less than New York, Massachusetts or California. But sure, keep calling Canada a tax nightmare. #WeAreGoldStar!
The flaw in equating Kucherov’s Florida after-tax earnings to a $20M Montreal salary is that it treats Florida’s tax advantage as justification for Tampa paying him less. That tax advantage is a player benefit and not a discount Tampa is entitled to capture.

DFO Insider (Nov 4): Notes on Nikita Kucherov… • Pagnotta doesn’t see a scenario where Tampa moves Kucherov unless the wheels completely fall off this season. • Jeff Marek adds that the way Tampa worded the press release, saying no intention of trading him, leaves the door open in case things change later in the season. • He thinks they’d be happy to keep him then let him go in the offseason like they did with Stamkos.
