The @NorthwesternMed Collaborative #BehavioralHealth Program gives psychiatric consultants a direct channel to influence treatment trajectories across a broader patient population.
With it, they can review symptom and medication response data with behavioral care coordinators to guide timely adjustments between visits. This structured, team-based model has helped primary care physicians and psychiatric consultants see patients improve more quickly.

One year after opening its doors, Bronzeville Outpatient Center is helping bring a broad range of care and community resources closer to home for thousands of people on Chicago’s South Side.
The center built on more than 20 years of collaboration with Bronzeville-area community organizations on efforts ranging from healthcare access and culturally responsive education to violence prevention, social services and workforce development. @NorthwesternMed has longstanding ties to area organizations such as @nearnorthhlth and @OutreachBright, as well as the #ChicagoHEALInitiative.
The 120,000-square-foot center was designed to bring world-class care and space for community health, education and engagement to people who live and work in Bronzeville and the surrounding communities.

“It’s not abnormal for people to feel lonely in certain instances,” says Eileen Graham, PhD, associate professor of medical social sciences at @NorthwesternU. “You know, low points in a person’s life, such as after a breakup or something like that. These sorts of things aren’t particularly problematic.”
What is problematic, she says, is longer-term, persistent loneliness. According to @alzheimerssoc, this kind of #SocialIsolation can increase a person’s #dementia risk by around 60%.
Graham points out that understanding what #loneliness is doing to the brain to heighten the risk of dementia is “an open question”, but she thinks it could be that lonely people engage in unhealthy behaviors or that loneliness is physically stressful for the brain.

In a bid to understand why one of the world’s most popular drugs summons such negative emotions, Sachin Patel, MD, PhD (@SachinPatelLab), and his colleagues investigated its effect on mice.
The team’s findings, published last week in @NatureComms, reveal that, when given such a drug, rodents suffer adverse reactions similar to the paranoia human #cannabis users feel. The effect is driven by a specific group of neurons in the central #amygdala, a brain region that processes #fear and #anxiety.

"For years, families across Illinois faced a painful reality: If they suspected their young child was #autistic, they might have to wait months or even years for an official diagnosis. That delay often meant missing a critical window for #EarlyIntervention and #therapy. Now, a new Illinois law, prompted by research led by @NorthwesternU's Megan Roberts, PhD, significantly expands who can legally deliver #autism diagnoses in Illinois."

When data from males and females are lumped together, important sex‑specific effects can disappear, creating the false impression that the results apply equally to everyone.
“It takes larger studies to conduct robust sex-specific analyses, but making the effort means that we have a better shot at drug development — and ultimately patient care — that benefits everyone,” said study author, Leah J. Welty, PhD, director of the #Biostatistics Collaboration Center at Northwestern and a professor of preventive medicine (biostatistics and informatics) and #psychiatry and #BehavioralSciences at @nufeinbergmed.

Improving access to #MentalHealth care is especially important to Karen Olvera, LCSW, CADC, because she has seen how many barriers patients face, from insurance limitations and clinician shortages to rural geography, long wait times and uncertainty about where to go.
The Collaborative #BehavioralHealth Program (CBHP) at @NorthwesternMed helps reduce those barriers by embedding behavioral health support within primary care.

Jeffrey N. Savas, PhD, co-authored a recently published study identifying an unexpected pathway between ANK3, a psychiatric risk gene, to neuron myelination. The study, conducted using two mouse models, revealed that the gene’s role likely extends beyond early brain development and well into adulthood.
Senior author Peter Penzes, PhD, says this discovery could pave the way for safer, more targeted treatments for bipolar disorder and related conditions. Find out more: news.feinberg.northwestern.e…
