Wigan ran in 17 tries to beat Blackpool 77-8 #OnThisDay 1963. Trevor Lake scored 4 & Laurie Gilfedder collected 29 points. The game is remembered for Billy Boston holding off tackling Brian Bevan (below) so he could score. Mutual respect by the game's two greatest try scorers.

Wigan Lance Todd Trophy Winners #1: Cec Mountford (1951) The club skipper won it in his final Wigan match, his sharp running & prompting lighting up a drab 10-0 win over Barrow, though many felt Billy Blan must have run him very close. Cec was the first overseas Lance Todd winner

Wigan Men of Steel #1: George Fairbairn (1980) A beacon of excellence in an era of misery. The classy, goal-kicking Scot won the award at the end of a season where Wigan were relegated. He was promptly made player coach, got Wigan promoted & was controversially sold to Hull KR

Flamboyant Salford wing Tex Evans dances in celebration after scoring in the Lancashire Cup Final #OnThisDay 1988. In a cracking game, Wigan clung on to win 22-17 with all their points coming from Kiwi stars Bell, Shelford & Kevin Iro. Salford were left ruing missed goal kicks

Brothers Ces & Ken Mountford shake hands before Wigan's match with New Zealand #OnThisDay 1947. Ken scored the winner as the Kiwis won 10-8 before a 22,000 crowd. Tragically, Ken Mountford would be one of 19 men who died in the 1967 Strongman Mine gas explosion aged just 42.

Wigan Overseas Players #70: Andre Stoop (Namibia) A fast, unorthodox RU full back who joined Wigan whilst touring the UK with his national side. Made 16 first team appearances before joining London & Keighley. Unfairly remembered for an error in the 1992 World Club Challenge.

A thrilling game between Wigan & Swinton #OnThisDay 1906. Wigan looked like they were pulling away when Johnny Thomas (below) scored their 2nd try before half time but thereafter Swinton piled on the pressure & the home side had to defend manfully to win 12-10 in a classic

Two tries and then 9/13 by foot, and England's Isabel Rowe has set a new record for points by a single player in a women's Rugby League World Cup game.
And on the back of that powerhouse performance, England demolish Wales 70-6.
