In recognition of Trans Awareness Week, we honor the contributions of some of the #NYUAlumni who have shaped history and continue to inspire through their work and advocacy. From Janet Mock (GSAS â06), the first to publish a memoir about the experiences of transitioning as a young person, first trans woman of color to write and direct a TV show, and first trans creator signed to develop content for a major media outlet; to Chris Mosier (STEINHARDT â11), the first known transgender athlete to qualify for a menâs US national team, a five-time member of Team USA in duathlon and triathlon, and who was named an All American Duathlete in 2016, we are proud to celebrate their lives and experiences. A year after graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Chang W. Lee (TSOA â93) landed an internship at The New York Times, where his fast-paced reporting earned him the nickname âTornado.â âIâd storm around the city covering stories and taking photos,â says Lee, who was hired full-time soon after and became a staff photographer in 1994.
Lee's journey to The New York Times began in South Korea, where he worked multiple jobs while studying English before transferring to NYU Tisch. âI didnât want to live like I did thenâI wanted to do something I loved for the rest of my life,â he says. Leeâs passion and dedication have resulted in two Pulitzer Prizes, for coverage of the September 11 attacks in New York City and for chronicling the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan during the protracted conflicts there. Currently, Lee focuses his photojournalism on people affected by rapidly changing environmental circumstances and social changes in Asia.

After beginning her studies at Drexel and then Cornell, Joyce Zohar (TANDON â61) found herself among the first women admitted to NYUâs College of Engineering. She funded her education with a successful three-month stint answering questions about atomic energy on the popular 1950s game show, The $64,000 Question.
âI didnât think of myself as a pioneer, just somebody who is a very curious person and wanted to know how things worked. That was the impetus,â says Zohar on her decision to study and pursue a career in engineering at a time when women were largely excluded from the field.
