Nearly 100,000 California state workers represented by SEIU Local 1000 plan a one-day strike on Wednesday 21 October.
Members voted 96% to authorise the walkout after the contract expired on 30 June. The Public Employment Relations Board rejected the Newsom administration’s attempt to block it, provided roughly 4,400 essential health and safety staff stay on duty.
The union wants higher pay, cheaper healthcare and more flexible telework.
DMV counters, state offices and some administrative services are expected to face longer waits.
This is the first full strike in the union’s history.
