I’ve never been shy about criticizing Nebraska’s Republican establishment. I despised the Ricketts political machine that helped give us Pillen as governor and Ricketts his Senate seat. And frankly, Pillen has given conservatives plenty of reasons to be disappointed.
But voting against someone simply to settle a political grudge is like burning down your own barn because you don’t like who built it. You’re still the one left dealing with the damage.
Here’s something worth considering about Brett Lindstrom. The Nebraska State Education Association endorsed him when he ran as a Republican in 2022, despite the union’s overwhelming support for Democrats. Now he’s left the Republican Party, and campaign finance records show NSEA money flowing into the political funding network supporting his new America First Party. That’s a relationship voters deserve to understand.
As someone who spends time inside our public schools, I have serious concerns about the teachers union’s priorities. I want higher academic standards, less political influence in classrooms, and more accountability for results.
I don’t think Pillen is the perfect governor, and I’ll continue calling out establishment politics wherever I see them. But I also believe we need to examine the records, financial backers, and governing plans of Lindstrom and Walz rather than letting frustration with Pillen make that decision for us.

If UNL students celebrated MLK’s assassination the way campuses marked Charlie Kirk’s, the university would be in national disgrace by sundown. Same act. Same glee over a corpse. A Nebraska family can easily drop $115,000 over four years at UNL so their kid can sit in classrooms where faculty political donations run 98 percent left in the latest cycle and historically hit 95 percent to Democrats. English once had zero registered Republicans on the roster.
In 2017 a graduate instructor called a TPUSA recruiter “neo-fascist Becky” and flipped her off on video while a professor joined the protest. This week the same campus put up “Rest in Piss” posters and YikYak posts celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination drew hundreds to 1,500 upvotes.
Kids do not automatically inherit our appetite to mobilize against that environment. FIRE gives UNL a D- speech climate; 51 percent of students say they self-censor at least monthly, 71 percent say shouting down speakers is acceptable at least rarely, and 29 percent say violence to stop a speaker is acceptable at least rarely. Lincoln has had a Democratic mayor since 2019 and no Republican in that office since 1998. That is not a neutral backdrop. Many 18-year-olds just want a degree and a job.
It is not their job to fight the professors, the students, and the city hall that produced this climate. So, spend your money elsewhere.

None of my kids are as “political” as I am. One’s a conspiracy theorist. The other two are as chill as it gets. I still want them to get the education that actually fits their goals. What I will not do is send them to a radical left-leaning campus that spends more time indoctrinating than educating and more time radicalizing than teaching them to think.
