Today’s independent AUKUS Public Inquiry, led by Peter Garrett, found that the submarine timetable is likely unachievable, that successive governments have concealed AUKUS’s true costs and risks, and that Australia could be left without an effective submarine capability.

The midterms look like they’ll be the wipeout so many have predicted (and so often have been embarrassingly wrong about) since Trump first entered politics, Susan B. Glasser writes. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/wq…

Please @AlboMP do not sell out Australia’s music, text, audio, video, arts, media creators to the AI platforms to “train” their data centres in local content. Please make this non-negotiable in fast tracking the AI revolution here. Yes we want this investment .. but only with fair compensation.

I love the way the first port of call is to blame teachers for whatever ill afflicts children. “What did you do to cause ‘x’ to call you an ‘effing dickhead’ ?” for instance. Indefensible behaviour by some boys, especially towards female teachers, is put down to wokeness!

No makes an argument like Jeff Sparrow does: The climate crisis may be reaching a tipping point. If we are ever to tackle the vested interests that stand in the way of any real solutions, we will need to sacrifice “social cohesion" - by Jeff Sparrow crikey.com.au/2026/09/02/nep…

Dolly Parton never wavered in her belief that everyone deserved to live openly, love freely and be accepted exactly as they are. As the world mourns the loss of an irreplaceable icon, her words remain as powerful as ever. Rest in peace, Dolly.

The writing is on the wall for Labor’s aged care assessment tool. Older people, carers and experts have been screaming for months that it's systematically under-assessing need & priority. Now the Senate has been crystal clear: it’s time for Labor to go back to the drawing board.

Labor’s moral turpitude on gambling advertising is indefensible. Australia smashed much larger countries in the Commonwealth Games precisely because we are a sports-loving culture. Our athletes grew up loving sport for its own value, not crass probabilities & profits. No longer.
