Another major way that parking minimums hurts affordability is by reinforcing car-dependency. That's because driving is expensive!!! And it's especially expensive for lower-income households: smartcitiesdive.com/.../tran… How can parking reform help?
This results in places with more urban sprawl having lower economic mobility: sciencedirect.com/scien…. Having cars, the most expensive way of getting around, the only way to get around makes escaping poverty harder.
We can make Dallas a more affordable city and reduce car dependency by having less parking and more productive land uses which will translate into more money for DART and other ways of getting around besides a car. Join us on Tuesday to hear more: actionnetwork.org/event…
Two big items up at Dallas City Council tomorrow. The first is authorizing about $45 million ($25 million from the downtown TIF and $20 million in an economic grant) for new Affordable Housing downtown by the West End station: candysdirt.com/2024….
The second item is the rezoning of Floral Farms, the site of the infamous former Shingle Mountain in Southern Dallas. The rezoning would change the area from mostly industrial to a more livable neighborhood.
Downwinders at Risk has been leading the charge on the rezoning, and you can send a letter in support here: downwindersatrisk.org/featu….
