Some times, rarely, our wishes do come true!
Serbian students have decided that enough is enough. Now they need to give political expression to what comes next. It will take courage and a clarity of purpose. I believe they have both. Let them show us the way forward theguardian.com/world/2025/f…

• Right to live, work, study, retire in 30+ countries • Friction-free artist touring
• 40 million pieces of paperwork per annum ditched
• Mutual recognition of qualifications • Reliable multi-annual regional funding
• A say on the rules our exporters already follow
What is it that people imagine they would get out of rejoining the EU that they don't already have?

This is brilliant. It resembles the sortition process used by Athens to select decision makers. It is far superior to the narcissism and money dominated popularity contests we currently call democracy.

Wow. I don’t know about this take of how it will be received but as a masterful summation about what the nation faces…
I believe this will be considered one of the most important videos in US history from this time.

It’s perfect. Mutual Free Movement means the job market just gets a lot bigger for them. They may even gain broader experiences and bring back transferable skills.

The BBC will never regularly - if at all - feature post-Keynesian or MMT economists. Neoliberal capitalism is the latest incarnation of a 4,400 year old private debt-servicing system, currently struggling for high-return investment opportunities as mass production is automated. Should the creditor class fail to maintain the myth that money is finite and must be borrowed as interest-bearing loans from wealthy private lenders the system will collapse.

As Trump ramps up his support for Putin (before the midterms hamstring him) a timely reminder 👇
Russia is not a Superpower It’s GDP is lower than France It’s population less than Brazil It cannot compete with ‘Big Beasts’ So looks to divide them - make them smaller - through bribing officials & “kompromat” Trump is their greatest success Farage & Brexit a close second

New: Sources from three countries confirm that the Trump Administration has advocated Viktor Orbán for UN Secretary-General. The US has encouraged Orbán to enter the race, even bringing him the initial idea of a joint U.S.-Russia-China candidacy. WSJ: wsj.com/opinion/viktor-orban…

Putin, Trump and MAGA love repeating the story that NATO betrayed Russia by expanding eastwards, supposedly breaking a promise never to admit countries once trapped under Soviet communist rule. There is one rather inconvenient detail they always leave out: those countries desperately wanted to join. And with good reason. They remember Soviet occupation, political executions, mass deportations to Siberia, forced collectivisation, prison camps, secret police, censorship and generations of lives destroyed by Moscow’s glorious socialist paradise. Families disappeared. Countries lost their independence. Ordinary people could be imprisoned for expressing the wrong opinion. When communism collapsed, these nations did not need NATO to persuade them to escape Russian influence. They practically ran towards the door. Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czechia and the others understood something the MAGA intellectual establishment apparently struggles with: living next to Russia is considerably more pleasant when Russia cannot decide how you live. And that brings us to Serbia. Aleksandar Vučić, a leader who spent years cultivating Moscow while balancing Serbia’s European ambitions, has just been defeated by a student-led democratic movement. The celebrations in Belgrade tell their own story. Serbia has its own complicated history, and nobody should pretend this election settles every question about NATO or EU membership. But it exposes the central absurdity of Moscow’s worldview. When a European leader continually argues against Western integration while protecting Russia’s influence, the obvious question is whose interests he actually serves. There is no need to invent secret payments to recognise a politician doing Moscow’s work. NATO did not expand eastwards because Washington forced unwilling nations into an alliance. It expanded because countries with experience of Russian domination wanted protection from ever experiencing it again. Putin, Orban, JD Vance, Hegseth and Trump calls that Western aggression. Russia, meanwhile, has spent centuries discovering that keeping its neighbours within its sphere of influence generally requires threats, repression or an army. That tells you almost everything about which civilisation has something worth offering.

Lula’s victory will be greeted with horror in Silicon Valley. Outside the EU, Brazil has been the biggest holders to account of US tech firms. And Facebook’s actions before the election deserve proper scrutiny
Lula victory speech: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions & billions, paying no taxes to this country & trying to steer this country's election results."

Hayek was a midwit snake-oil salesman of the first order. Put simply, the legally established negative liberty he champions permits the unequal ability of uncoerced individuals to achieve a very narrow and often unethically gained type of success in his ridiculously idealised 'market'. Then they monopolise market sectors and buy their way into power to exploit and coerce others. Result - the constant renewal and reproduction of the 1% revolving-door oligarchy. Tent cities getting bigger but GDP looks good and we've got AI! Hordes of unthinking wannabe strivers have been persuaded that this is the timeless moral and natural order of things.
“In order to make people equal, you have to treat them differently. If you treat people alike, the result is necessarily inequality.” — F. A. Hayek

1/ Last month I told a room of Baltic intelligence officers and diplomats that Donald Trump is an asset of Russian intelligence. Not one of them blinked. "Of course," they said. Ho hum. But in America, saying it out loud is still taboo. Why? 🧵
