Drapatyi is an excellent choice. As OTU Kharkiv and Luhansk, OSUV Khortytsia/Dnipro, and Joint Forces Task Force commander over the past two years, he brings a wealth of experience commanding units on most of the front line with a good understanding of the character of the fighting. As Land Forces commander, he also has recent experience in mobilization/training issues. Both are critical as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The war in Iran may have reached an uneasy ceasefire. But for Iranians themselves, stuck under a suffocating comms blackout and a regime that shows no signs of falling, nothing is clear. I spoke to some Iranians in the country for @CBCNews: cbc.ca/news/world/iran-war-u… – at Armenia

If you're interested and have a few bucks to spare, I'd love your support in creating on-the-ground reporting with Ukraine's armed forces as they fight the Russian invaders. Donation link is below. Thank you in advance 🙏 buymeacoffee.com/neilphauer

In the wake of the dramatic events ongoing in Jaramana and Suwayda, worth noting that I have a long piece on Suwayda and the Druze that I am still looking for a home for. Happy to share the pitch with editors - anyone interested?

Have a pair of longform pieces (3,000-5,000 words) on Syria that I'm trying to find homes for. I've got good pitches drawn up for each, but struggling to find the right outlet(s). Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

Editors: I'm looking for a home for a story of mine on Latakia, Syria, where I was present just days before the the explosion of violence there this past weekend. Anyone interested? DMs are open.

Compare SOHR and SNHR as monitors in Syria. One, a grossly unreliable source, is just making assertions about people wanting the SDF to deploy in Lattakia. The other issues a detailed/comprehensive report. Why on earth does the media use SOHR as a crutch for all their reporting?

Breaking: Excellent speech by al-Sharaa announcing there will be no mercy with former Assad regime members inciting violence against the state and attacking members of the armed forces, the punishment of whoever commits violations against civilians, criminalizing the calls for foreign intervention, and the establishment of a fact-finding mission. Al-Sharaa is turning the threat into an opportunity.

A Reality Mapper captures as young Sunni men stage a show of force in al-Ziraa, an Alawite district of Latakia city on the Syrian coast. Shouting anti-Alawite curses, their display follows clashes earlier today between security forces and Alawites in the village of Qardaha. #Syria

Re-upping this as I'm in final preparations for this trip - will be flying to Beirut on Sunday and crossing to Damascus on Monday. Any support appreciated!
Dear Twitter, I have a humble request today. I am presently planning a long reporting trip to Syria, looking to spend nearly a month in the country telling the stories of its many communities under the Assad regime, as well as their hopes - and fears - for the future.

For all the "regime change" and "intervention" nonsense we've been hearing since 2013, it's quite ironic how the regime in Syria is actually collapsing when America is not, at all , involved.

This is what I'm hearing all around from the Syrians I know. There is no love lost on Jolani or the HTS but to the vast majority of the Syrian people Assad is the bigger evil, by a long shot.
Nobody wants HTS, Jolani or any religious fanatics to govern an inch of Syria, but that's just how bad Syrians want Assad gone. A lesson for all those who decided that Syrians and their aspirations can simply be ignored.

Earlier this year, I visited Kupiansk, a frontline city in NE Ukraine. In an immersive audio series, I reported on Russia's push to reoccupy the city - and the Ukrainian defenders stopping them. First episode out now for @lions_by podcast subscribers. Trailer below:
In early 2024 @NeilPHauer went to Kupiansk, Ukraine as it faced down the threat of possibly being occupied for a second time. Lions Led By Donkeys Presents: The Kupiansk Dispatches soundcloud.com/llbdpodcast/t…

Twitter friends, do I know anyone who could recommend/put me in touch with a good book agent? Someone who'd know what to do with a book proposal on war reporting. Also open to publisher connections and advice from anyone who's done this before !

Following Pr Snyder’s endorsement of Terrell Jermaine Starr, here’s a timely reminder that the man is a grifter who profited off of Ukraine and raised an exorbitant amount of money while actual journalists like @efmikkelsen were risking their lives to report on Russia’/ invasion.
Imagine crowd funding $20,000 USD - which you claim you need to afford cost of living in Ukraine for a ‘few months’, then leaving the country about a month later, and blocking people (actually a colleague) that ask about the funds that were raised.
