Patrick Stewart. Turned up so early and so unobtrusively to be a star in the reasonably priced car, we mistook him for a delivery driver and asked him to go round the back. Took his hat off and said, “But I’m the captain of the Enterprise”. Fucking nice guy.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Happy 85th Birthday to our 71 Double winning keeper. Who went on to become a top sports presenter and a superb goalkeeping coach. Bob also founded the fantastic charity Willow. He is an absolute gentleman and I say this every year but it’s about time he became Sir Bob Wilson

RIP Patrick Stewart. What an actor. I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take. Legend.

We’re deeply saddened by the loss of Star Trek icon Sir Patrick Stewart, who lived with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who loved his work. bbc.co.uk/news/live/cq23dve8…

This is really poor by @FA. The governing body is supposed to protect players. It should be disputing this regulatory commission verdict by members drawn from the FA judicial panel. Max Dowman could have suffered a bad injury to his standing leg from a dangerous challenge which went unpunished. Arsenal 16-year-old shouldn’t have reacted but his frustration was understandable. Some other players might have rolled around and ensured a bad challenge was punished. Dowman didn’t. He doesn’t stay down. The FA should have shown some understanding towards Dowman. Instead, it has suspended him for three games. FA priorities all wrong: tolerating a poor challenge and some weak refereeing but punishing a kid who objected to a bad challenge that could have dealt him a serious injury. Protect players. #AFC

I genuinely don’t know how to put into words how grateful I am for this. 💙 £3,000 is an unbelievable gesture and for you all to do this for me and my family means more than you’ll ever know. People always talk about Wealdstone being a family club, but it’s moments like this that really show what that means. The love and support I’ve received has been overwhelming. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone involved. I’ll never forget this generosity. Proud to be a Stone 💙🙏🏽

Staggered people just aren’t looking at what is clearly in front of their face. You can literally see what it does to Dowmans leg and how it twists at the knee. That is so close to an ACL. The legs clearly scissor Dowman, that is a fact. Two legs, either side of a standing leg is a scissor. And it’s dangerous because of exactly what happened to Dowmans knee when he twisted. It has absolutely nothing to do with the force. No issue with an extremely firm tackle, even if it puts someone two feet in the air if it’s just pure force. But tackles like this are so dangerous to a career. Then the pathetic audacity to moan and swarm when Dowman reacts, pretty reasonably and low key, with a shrug of a leg. Every instinct in me would want to smack the players jaw if he tackled me like this, so Dowman done really fucking well actually to keep as cool as he did. Fake hard man crap football still rewarded in this country more than skill.
RED CARD for Max Dowman! 🟥

Watched this at 12 years old on a 14 inch black and white tv with a coat hanger for an aerial and it still hits different today. Great memories.
It’s been 41 years since Dennis Taylor and Steve Davis went to the very last ball in one of the greatest sporting finales EVER. 🔥 IS THIS THE GREATEST WORLD FINAL IN SNOOKER HISTORY?

I must say, it was difficult hearing the hurt in Gary Neville's voice at the end of that game, so I turned up the volume on the TV and could hear it much better.

If any Arsenal friends (anybody in fact!) could donate (or Retweet) anything towards this little boy’s treatment, however small, it would mean the world to his family. No child should have to go through this. #Arsenal #COYG Thank you and God bless x🔴⚪️ solvingkidscancer.org.uk/chi…
