Last night in NYC, at "A Night of Hope" beneath Sorolla's Vision of Spain at the Hispanic Society, hosted by Javier García and the Columbus Children's Foundation. The goal is to get advanced therapies to children with rare diseases faster. Much of the work we celebrated came from my Ohio State colleague Dr. Krys Bankiewicz. Untreated, AADC deficiency is a devastating, often fatal childhood disorder in which children can't make dopamine or serotonin. After a single gene therapy treatment delivered directly to the brain, children who couldn't hold up their heads are now speaking, sitting, and walking. This is what gene therapy can do. It was an honor to share the evening with Sheila Mikhail, Krys, and gene therapy pioneer Jude Samulski. Pavarotti competition winner Victor Cardamone sang, conductor and pianist Ramón Tebar played. Great first year for the Research Update in Neuroscience for Neurosurgeons (#RUNN) course at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, CA, after many years at Woods Hole, MA.  A full house of neurosurgery trainees with great questions. I had the chance to talk about convective delivery for nervous system gene therapy. The residents and fellows in that room are the ones who will carry this from clinical trials into everyday practice. Neurosurgery Grand Rounds (@NeurosurgeryOSU) today with Dan Donoho, M.D., (@ddonoho) of Children’s National Hospital (@ChildrensNatl) and George Washington University (@GWtweets).
